When Claire and James move into a beautiful Victorian home together, she soon discovers that he is being seduced by a secret from his past, one thought buried long ago."If you love writers like Joe Hill, Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Richard Matheson or Joe R. Lansdale, you owe it to yourself to give Evans Light a try...this new voice on the scene packs enough inventive storytelling twists to delight even the most jaded fans of horror and suspense."(Also available as part of the SCREAMSCAPES: TALES OF TERROR collection, by Evans Light) Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

That's what happened to me. I couldn't buy into the whole ghost becoming an adult after dying at the age of ten. So the first time James is seduced by the curtains, I was picturing a ten-year-old girl doing the caressing. Can you see why I was put off? It isn't until later that the author tells us that the ghost is actually a matured version of the ten-year-old dead girl, but by then it was too late.
Also, I feel there are some inconsistencies with the kids in the flashback/dream James has. At ten, he has a feeling of wanting and desire for the little girl who lives across the street, his best friend, yet when she kisses him, he wipes the kiss off. She kisses him again, and he kisses her back. This took me out of the moment. It's been 24 years since I was ten, but I don't remember kissing being a sensual thing. It was awkward. Something you did because you saw grown folks doing it. This is subjective, I suppose. Others might have had passionate kisses at the age of ten, but I wasn't one of them. This flashback also led me to believe that the ghost in the curtains was a sexualized ten year old because the author already described the desire of the kids, which put me off even further.
In summation: The story does manage to be thoroughly creepy, as long as you can get past the whole ghost-growing-up thing. Not my favorite Evans Light tale, but well-written. Oh, and I liked the alternate ending better.
