“The Lover in the Lake” 4 **** STARS
The first story of this book is “The Lover in the Lake,” and I really liked it. It was a quick read of about twenty pages since it was a short story, but I enjoyed it a lot. I think this story line has the potential to be a full-length novel if the author wanted. I was instantly intrigued from the beginning. Even though we only met the characters for a short while, I liked them and wanted to get to know them more.
Lisa, a young woman who recently lost the love of her life, is unbearably lonely and sad. She cannot sleep much and when she does, she is plagued by nightmares of her dead fiancé. She spends a lot of her time taking walks down by the lake near her house. While at the lake, Lisa sees things that she cannot explain. There is a man from the lake that takes form at night from the mist. This man looks identical to Mark – Lisa’s love. She finds it very tempting to follow this man into the darkness if it means being with Mark again – even if she knows it is not really him. Lisa then learns the truth about this man and the lake…but will that be enough or Lisa to do what is right?
“Shadow’s Crossing” 4 **** STARS
The second short story in “Unpath’d Waters and Undream’d Shores” is titled “Shadow’s Crossing.” This paranormal read was also about twenty pages, and captured my attention right away.
“Shadow’s Crossing” is about a bitter ferryman in charge of transporting passengers across the water. He often wished he was not born into a family of ferrymen – he hated the long, cold nights of waiting. However, he was safe along the water from the diseases plaguing the lands and causing many deaths, so at least that was a benefit of the job. One night, a dark and mysterious man with his equally dark horse needed the ferryman’s services to reach his destination. Although the ferryman was not frightened easily, this stranger absolutely terrified him. The things this horseman said chilled him to the bone. In addition, he wanted to travel to the land regardless of the plague because he knew it could not harm him. The ferryman soon discovered the truth about the horseman. Read this book to find out what he discovered, how he reacted to what he learned, and what happened next.
