In Nov. 1942 a U.S. cargo plane crashed into the Greenland ice cap, the B-17 sent on the search-and-rescue mission got caught in a storm and also crashed, miraculously all nine men aboard survived. A second rescue operation was launched, but the plane, the Grumman Duck, flew into a storm and vanished. The survivors of the B-17 spent 148 days fighting to stay alive while waiting for rescue by famed explorer Bernt Balchen. A true story with enough drama than it needed no embellishments. Zuckoff keeps you straining for the end of each chapter and does a brilliant job switching the drama from the past to the present. My life has been so easy. ( )

In November 1942, an American military plane crashed in Greenland. In a search and rescue effort, two other planes crashed. The end result was nine men stranded in extreme cold in a remote location, attempting to survive in intermittent blizzards with limited food. Mitchell Zuckoff tells the story of the multiple crashes and the heroic rescue attempts. He weaves in an account of a 2012 expedition (in which he played a key role) to locate and recover one of the missing planes.

This narrative non-fiction is filled people facing dangerous conditions. It includes planes landing on ice, planes flying in “milk” (white-out), dog sled teams traveling across unstable glaciers, isolated crash survivors facing frostbite, hypothermia, and psychological trauma. It serves to highlight one of the lesser known stories of WWII. It is well-researched and told with dramatic flair. Just when we think conditions cannot get worse, they do.

As in most dual storylines, one of the two is more riveting than the other. The modern quest for lost heroes is perhaps a bit oversold. I listened to the audiobook, competently read by the author. Unlike some authors reading their own books, Zuckoff has a pleasant voice and conveys the intensity of the situation. It is a gripping story that will appeal to those interested in WWII history, aviation, geology, and accounts of survival in harsh conditions.

This was a really interesting story and suspenseful, especially if you hadn’t heard of this event before. Picked this up for the #buzzwordathon for March 2021 because it had “time” in the title, and I do not regret it! ( )

An extremely hard book for me to rate. This is my 4th Zuckoff book , and my least favorite.

In 1942 an Army cargo plane crashed into the ice caps of Greenland. During a search and rescue, two additional planes crashed. This is the story of locating and trying to save the men caught in the brutal weather of Greenland's winter. In addition Zuckoff writes about a 2012 expedition, he was a part of, that went searching for one of those planes and the 3 Americans that died there. The stories alternate, as all duel story line books, chapter to chapter. The 1943 story held me captive. There were moments I cried for the men caught up in this disaster. I hated moving onto the current day story. That piece of it dragged for me, and I really disliked some of the people involved. Which of course is not the authors fault. I love Zuckoff's story telling, I just had issues with that piece of it especially as there was no resolution

As I said, a hard one to rate. I am going to up it on GR's to 4 stars, but if I could stick with 3 1/2 I would. ( )

In "Frozen in Time", Mitchell Zuckoff was able to capture the emotions of two groups of airmen on Greenland's icecap. The first group was the separate airmen stranded after their planes crashed during the early 1940's. The second was the group setting out some seventy years later, determined to locate and recover the remains of the airmen who were never rescued. Zuckoff tells the story of the several daring rescue attempts, the hazards they stranded and rescuers faced, and the creativity and bravery of all. "Frozen in Time" was an enjoyable read, well researched and well told. ( )
