Josetta's story has more focus and is rounded out by the mysterious Rafe Adova, living as a career gambler. Corene has several scenes and starts to develop from the bratty, sad little sister. Relieved to be so far out of the line of succession, she spends her days running a homeless shelter in the slums. Rafe is a professional gambler in the slums living on his wits and luck. They meet when Rafe rescues Josetta's sister from a bad situation. I love the world-building in this book, from the blessings and magic system to the elaymotives and Industrial Revolution setting. And though Josetta found politics a dead bore, I also loved the political intrigue and maneuvering going on at court. To protect him, Josetta has to stick close, and it’s not a hardship for the young noblewoman who develops a fondness for him. But to keep him alive might be more of a challenge.
