This third installment of the Blanche White series sees Blanche living in Boston and temporarily working for an aspiring politician and his wife. She soon finds herself embroiled in a whole series of events: blackmail, corruption, and multiple gruesome murders. Blanche Cleans Up was very readable, and Blanche is as vivid a character as ever, but I didn't enjoy this as much as previous installments. There were times when a lighter hand might have served Barbara Neely better in making some of points she was trying to put across here, and near the end the novel took a twist into some very dark issues that I'd prefer to avoid. Readable, but not one I'll be revisiting. ( )

This was exceptionally good. The mystery was actually decent and a bit more complicated than the previous 2 books-which was nice. Usually the mystery isn't that great it's the other aspects of the story that are.
This books themes were crooked politicians period, uncle tom politicians, misuse of religion in politics, effects of lead paint, homosexuality in the black community as well as in US. Prostitution, a few of the ideas presented around this were dated and not ok. Otherwise these books continue to be extremely feminist and intersectional. ( )

so enjoyable! neely once again delivers a story with heart, while dealing with important racial and social issues. the novel is engaging without ever feeling preachy, and i was particularly fond of the focus on families and community. blanche is such a strong protagonist - but she's flawed and self-aware which makes for a terrific combination of traits. Another enjoyable read in this character's series. Her viewpoint and sense of humour make it a fun read. Great for something with some body but not super deep. ( )

I started it and got about 50 pages in and decieded it just wasn't for me. I liked the Boston setting but I didn't connect with the main character, Blanche, at all. Since my to be read pile is huge and getting bigger all the time, I deceided to release this one and hope the next reader enjoys it.
