A strange encounter and a cryptic message leaves Gerard Faust a changed man. Now a novel he can't remember writing is burning up the sales charts, but is something other than his own talent lurking within?"Whatever Possessed You?" is both chilling and darkly humorous - a perfect fit for fans of short-form horror fiction...and a story that lingers long after you put it down.(This short story is a selection from SCREAMSCAPES: TALES OF TERROR, by Evans Light) Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

Evans Light is good people. Just an all around nice dude. He's even reviewed my collection WHAT THE DARK BRINGS. He's a good writer, too, though I didn't know that until today. This story is well-written, and immaculate when it comes to editing. I simply found far too much wrong with this plot to give it anything higher than a two. Mind you, I go by Amazon's standards when reviewing. Two stars simply means I didn't like it, that it wasn't for me. I reserve one-stars for unreadable garbage. This wasn't poorly written, just poorly conceived.
So why didn't I like this story? Well, the dialogue was hilarious, but I don't think it was suppose to be. The demon's dialogue especially. There was nothing scary or even disconcerting about the demon. In fact, I wouldn't have minded being possessed by him. Maazo Maazo (the demon) is a terrific lover, can write his ass off, and only wants the best for the people he possesses. It's not like he's going to make me kill anyone... Oh, wait...
And here comes the biggest problem with WHATEVER POSSESSED YOU; the huge plot hole. If the demon wants to be famous, wants to be some world renowned author who gets to travel the world, then why in Tom Cruise's holy name did the demon make Gerard kill his wife then sit, catatonic, at his computer until the cops arrived? Murder is not conducive to becoming the next Stephen King or Dr. Suess (supposedly, those two authors are possessed by demon's as well, and that's why they're so successful). Gerard had already written the brilliant novel, had even sold it off for six figures, and the demon throws all that away because the wife bothered him during the final edit? Didn't gel with me.
Damn it. I really wanted to like this one. I spoke with a fan of the Light Brothers and they said Evans's other stories are much better. I think I'll give AborEATum a try. Or maybe CRAWLSPACE. I'm not giving up on this author yet. ( )
