Kept losing interest... ( )

Once I’ve read one book I like by an author, I tend to recognize their name and pick up their other books when I run across them, back cover unread. So I picked this one up thinking it would be a psychological suspense novel like Heaberlin’s Black-eyed Susans.

The “deliciously chilling” description on the cover should have clued me in. This book is best described as a ‘summer beach read’ – and a fun one at that!

Lie Still starts out in shades of darkness, but quickly morphs into a feisty little mystery with plenty of sharp wit and humor. Not what I had in mind, but enjoyable. It kept my attention. I laughed out loud a couple of times. Not my usual cup of tea, but a pleasant change of pace. 4 stars. ( )

I loved this author's other thriller but the main character in this one revolted me with her constant slut shaming and fat shaming. I understand that not all characters are likable, nor do I normally require them to be, but I felt like I was being asked to be sympathetic to this character but found it difficult when she was such a nasty individual. My feelings about this character have probably colored my overall impression of the story but I felt that the writing in Lie Still was no where near as strong as in Black Eyed Susans. I felt that all of the characters were too cliche and none of them likable. I found it impossible to connect with the story or the characters. On a positive note, The audio narration was excellent. I thought at first this was the author first novel because it paled in comparison to the other two. But its her second. The first one was awesome, the third brilliant. this one felt like she was trying too hard. ( )
