The character Precious Ramotswe is a large and loveable woman determined to solve mysteries, however mundane is some cases they may be. Throughout the novel she is faced with cheats, thieves, deadly wildlife and more than one marriage proposal yet she bears all problems with a calculated and clever return. A mentality which ensures she wins all of her client's cases.
The novel, set in Botswana Africa, blends in a historical, traditional and contemporary outlook on the lives and nature of life in Africa. For me, this really adds to the originality of the novel, never having been to Africa myself, the honest reality of the land is both a rewarding and educational read for all who decide to undertake this charismatic series.
As with all McCall Smith's books, the stories are less about detectives and mysteries and more about the people, their morals, values and humanity. The distinction between good and bad, honest and lies may become blurred at times yet there is always a clear line that should never be crossed. Mma Ramotswe's judge of character is never far from wrong in the people she comes across and the deeds in which they deal.
All the way the story and its detective cases release enjoyable and hilarious thoughts and opinions of Mma Ramotswe who description of characters and events will keep you smiling consistently throughout the book.
I would certainly recommend this book to any reader who fancies a giggle but who also wants a sophisticated and cleverly written novel. All other McCall Smith novels and series are seriously recommended as well!!
