Part of my massive Barbara Gordon Re-read which I had a glorious amazing time with. The art in the early Batgirl stuff was very touch and go to me, which made me wince a while reading through it, but I definitely appreciated the beginning of Cass' story, and Bab's involvement in that with Cass and with/against Bruce. ( ) This is the start of the Batgirl series featuring Cassandra Cain, who came to take up the cowl after the events of No Man's Land. Ms. Cain is the daughter of an assassin who trained her since childhood to be the perfect assassin. She is now seeking redemption, and Batman and Barbara take her under their wing. I definitely like Cassandra, but this particular volume seemed a bit convoluted at times in terms of plot as well as the panels, so there were parts of the story that I found a bit difficult to follow. Still, the story overall and the character are appealing, and I will seek out other volumes hoping things will get better. Cassandra Cain was introduced during the No Man's Land storyline. And her story continues in this TPB. Barbara has given Cass her mantle and becomes her mentor as well (also housing the 17 year old). Her back story is interesting too. Her father (although they don't make it clear if he's her birth father or not) trained her since she was practically an infant to be an assassin. Even going so far as to not teach her language. Instead, people's movement is her language, while she doesn't understand or speak English (or any other spoken language). I really liked the relationships in this story. The stuff between Batman and Cass is great, the scenes between Barbara and Cass are even better, and the couple of scenes concerning Cass but between Barbara and Batman were awesome. I didn't love the art, but it wasn't so bad that it was distracting from the story either. This was kind of disappointing because I had thought it would be Barbara Gordon Batgirl and it's not, it's Cassandra Cain Batgirl. That being said, the story was interesting but too much black on black made some panels a little bit hard to handle. Since I already have the second one out of the library, I will give it another shot. In post-No Man's Land, Gotham, Batgirl struggles to live a normal life. But when a mercenary from her past resurfaces, bent on revenge, Batgirl must bury her own violent tendencies and break the cycle of death and destruction that has dogged her since childhood.
