Review: 2.5 stars

General: Let me start off by saying that this review is probably more subjective than any of my others as I was unable to finish this book but felt that while I did not enjoy what I was reading, there are many who would. So due to that my review was that of had I finished reading because for me, quite a bit of the problems I had were technical not plot.

The description of this book is absolutely fantastic. I could not wait to read it. The descriptions within the book are also absolutely amazing. I loved getting to have a zombie as a hero and a deformed Fae as well. However, this was a series book and it was not stated as such in the description so for much of the beginning I was confused and frustrated as paranormals were running all around like it was normal and ok with no explanation. Upon realizing it is a series book this does not bother me as much, however i still feel when you enter into a world different than the real one, explanation in short forms should be given.

I thought the idea to use a djinni (confusion as to what this was as well as it appeared to be a combination of Djinn and Genie) and an un dead. The description for all three characters- Jewel, Tam and Gavin were fantastic. I couldn’t not know exactly who they were immediately. I also appreciated that while in first person the book does jump narratives. However, more than once it jumped point of view tense. For me, that made it appear incomplete and as it kept occurring my frustration built and I could not finish. For clarification this is a first person novel and in multiple sections it appeared to slip into third person. It is entirely possible I was misreading but I checked repetitively and therefore I was unable to finish because small mistakes always occur, complete tense and POV jumps for me are not acceptable, no matter how good the characters and story may be had I kept reading.

Characters: Jewel: I could not stand Jewel. This is not to say she was poorly written, she wasn’t. However there was not an iota of sympathy I could force myself to feel for her. She was impulsive, conceited, and overall selfish. Traits that still made a great character, just not for a lead in my opinion.

Tam: Tam is an extremely original character while following the traditional hero formula. I loved his bad boy roots.His passion from his past and his love were amazing. But at some points I was so annoyed with how much o a bad boy he was I had trouble caring about him.

Gavin: Gavin is the true central character in this book. Tormented beyond belief with such a beautiful soul…and horny at that…I think Gavin has my vote for what kept me page turning until I no longer could any further. ( )
