I thought this was really cute, so I shared it at my family story time. It wasn't a super hit (just a little too long, I think), but I could tell the audience really felt for Spike and wanted him to succeed. The message is that an ugly dog can have a beautiful heart. Awww. ( )

This would be a great book to read when the students begin building their own stories and illustrations.

Spike the Ugliest Dog in the Universe is a book about Spike the dog trying not to get sent to the pound. His owner abandons him, but a neighbor boy wants to adopt him. His mother says they don't have the money, so Spike tries to change his ways and be a good boy. Of course, all dogs are good boys, so he ends up saving his cat friend/etiquette coach and becomes a town hero. The boy gets money from the newspaper for his pictures of spike and it's enough money to take care of the dog.
The art in this book is a collage of cloth, and it's really creative! also, it's about dogs, which is great. ( )

Fun book - all the more fun because I read it at the State Fair! ( )
