This book, by a leading Reformation scholar, is the only comprehensive introduction to Zwingli's thought for the student and general reader. In it Stephens discusses the main areas of debate in Zwingli studies and presents a variety of interpretations of his work. In the opening chapters, he places Zwingli in the context of Zurich and Switzerland in the sixteenth century, describes the various influences on Zwingli's development, and outlines his life and work as a reformer. The following two chapters introduce the main themes in Zwingli's thought, and these are related both to the life and work of the man himself as well as the views of other reformers. A final chapter considers Zwingli as a reformer and theologian, emphasizing, as Stephens does throughout the book, Zwingli's relevance today.… (mehr)

Good intro to the man. An easy read enough read if your interested in this area. Zwingli comes out as an attractive character. I was surprised by how often i was given the impression that his thinking corresponds with my own. Perhaps he will come back into fashion? ( )

In 148 pages of text, Stephens has succeeded admirably in his goal of writing an introduction to Zwingli's thought for students and knowledgeable
lay people.

Stephens offers English readers their first introduction to Zwingli's thought which is set in the context of his life and times. Other major treatments have been either topical or biographical, and none has achieved Stephens's concise, but comprehensive presentation. The general reader will benefit most because this volume provides the uninitiated with essential historical details about Zürich and the Swiss Confederation, as well as a relatively complete biographical sketch of the reformer.

The value of this book is that it introduces Zwingli's thought in a clear and systematic way. It is enhanced by a list of dates in Zwingli's life and ministry, a bibliography, a glossary, short biographies of some principal figures, and an index. The glossary defines twenty-six terms such as alhiosis, communicato idiomatum, Schmalkald League, and the Diet of Speyer. The short biographies include Martin Bucer, Heinrich Bullinger, Heinrich Glarean, Philip Melanchthon, Oswald Myconius, John Oecolampadius, Conrad Pellican, and Beatus Rhenanus, all lesser reformation figures.
