Incredibly intriguing story, unexpected ending but only because so often these days monsters are romanticized. Looking forward to the other stories in this series! The old house within which most of the story takes place carries most of the depth and character. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Member Giveaways geschrieben. Daphne discovers her husband, who leaves frequently on business trips, has been cheating. They have just moved into a new country manor, and in her husband’s absence, she feels no guilt in doing a bit of cheating herself. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the manor hosts the spirit of a former owner, and this spirit takes full – and I do mean full – advantage of her.The sex Cassie Alexander depicts in The Haunted starts out wanton and wild as Daphne submits to the rather expert uses the resident spirit puts her to. The descriptions are highly sensual, and convincing, as Daphne becomes more and more willing, anxious even, to be used and abused as the invisible spirit has his way – frequently. I remember thinking, what a perfect paramour, her husband will never see or hear him, and is gone so much anyway … But the dominating and demanding spirit turns out to be quite a bit less than perfect. And Daphne goes from wanton hussy to cautious and reluctant victim when the spirit’s temper and true nature become more and more apparent. This story starts slowly, as I waited for events to launch from the strictly sensual – which I enjoyed, don’t get me wrong – to the more involved and tense. This buildup is subtle, and for the subtlety and gradualness, all the more effective. This book traces sex that starts as satisfying, becomes mesmerizing and ends up threatening, and readers who enjoy these themes will find this book quite rewarding.
