Raised by wizards who never missed an opportunity to remind him of his deficiencies, Ned grows up believing his mage skills are seriously lacking. When he's conscripted at an early age, he fears it's a back-handed way to ensure he sustains an honorable death in battle. Struggling against prejudice, insidious lies, and lack of knowledge about his mage powers-which are really quite different from wizard magic-Ned finds ways to keep going. To his immense relief, his first mission away from the wizards demonstrates that he's stronger and more resourceful than he thought. Against stiff odds, he learns different isn't necessarily bad and true love has a way of shining through.… (mehr)

This book was a little different from a lot of the books I read. It took me a while to realize that it was taking place on earth, was probably in the future and that the humans had pretty much destroyed earth so almost no humans were alive. Ned is a mage who was raised by wizards but is not liked by them. He can do magic but not like the wizards who are the main race on earth. He encounters a family in hiding in the mountains and falls for the daughter Amanda. Amanda is captured and the fighting really begins. This was a well written book that had some very different concepts I would never think of using. If you like fantasy stories about the world of wizards then you will enjoy this book.

I won this book in the Goodreads giveaway. ( )
