"A FINE LINE is a terrific novel, a legal thriller that is also full of complex meditations on the life of the lawyer and the difficult compromises inherent in any system of criminal justice. A book that is intensely rewarding at many levels." Scott Turow The fifth in the best-selling Guido Guerrieri series. When Judge Larocca is accused of corruption, Guerrieri goes against his better instincts and takes the case. Helped by Annapaola Doria, a motorbike-riding bisexual private detective who keeps a baseball bat on hand for sticky situations, he investigates the alleged links to the mafia. Of course Guerrieri cannot stop himself from falling for Annapaola's exotic charms. The novel is a suspenseful legal thriller but it is also much more. It is the story of a judge who, to quote Dostoevsky, "lies to himself and listens to his own lies, so gets to the point where he can no longer distinguish the truth, either in himself or around himself."… (mehr)

Altro libro indimenticabile e imperdibile.

I was slightly disappointed in this one -- the fifth book in a series about a lawyer based in Bari, Italy. The prior four books had more plot, and showcased Guido Guerrieri's legal skills, especially in court. In this one, Carofiglio spent more time philosophizing about life, happiness, and morality. Guerrieri is asked by a local judge to determine whether he is being wrongly investigated for corruption based on the testimony of a known criminal, and to defend him. Working with his private investigator, Guerreri learns the truth and then has to decide if he can continue to represent the judge. Like the other books, only more intensely here, there is a focus on Guerreri's personal life, friendships, his pastimes, etc. ( )

Bari attorney Guido Guerrieri takes on a high profile client in this series entry. Pierluigi Larocca is a magistrate who believes he may be under investigation for corruption. Guido and the judge had been in school at the same time and had been friendly at the time, but that was years ago. More recently, they had seen each other mainly in the courtroom. Guido views him as an ethical judge, which makes his decision to take the case a fairly easy one. It’s a decision he may come to regret.

Like the fictional Guido, the author of the series is a lawyer born in Bari. Through Guido, he reflects on the nature of justice and the role of attorneys and judges in the judicial system. This is the best book in the series so far, and unfortunately it seems to be the last, at least for the time being. ( )
