Sixteen-year-old drummer Stella, guitarist Jacob and bassist Miles need a wild singer for their old-school rock band. When they discover nerdy Tamara Donnelly, who nails the national anthem at a baseball game, Stella is not convinced Tamara's sound is right for the band. Stella wants to turn Tamara into a rock goddess, but Tamara proves to be a confident performer who has her own ideas about music and what it means to be epic cool. When their band, the Frail Days, starts to build a local following, Stella and Tamara clash over the direction the band should take, forcing them to consider what true musical collaboration means.… (mehr)

I loved The Frail Days as it was a fantastic short story that moved along at just the right pace, with well thought out development and characters. I could not put it down and only wish I had one more page by the end, and for me that is great. I love a book that leaves me wanting so much more and has me experiencing so many emotions. The book was also well written, great job to the author for writing a fantastic book. I will be keeping an eye out for more. ( )

The Frail Days was just an okay book for me. It has a great message but it’s a super fast read and I think that is why I can only give it two stars. I wish it had been longer. It just seemed like everything was happening too fast. It might have been a three star book if it was even 200 pages. It had everything it needed to be a good book, but unfortunately it was just okay.

If you want a fast, easy read, than you might want to check this one out. It might also be a good one for a kid that likes to read but can’t sit through bigger books. I wish I would have picked this up for a read-a-thon. ( )

I love the Frail Days! While t was a little short for my liking, I still thought it was a very charming read. I can definitely see myself picking it up soon for a reread. ( )

The Frail Days is great short read by Gabrielle Prendergast. The book tells the story of staying true to what you believe and not letting anyone including yourself from stopping that. So often in life, we end up betraying ourselves over petty reasons. Several times in the book, the lure of stardom or the need for revenge, almost derails Stella and her friends. But instead of allowing that, they plow ahead and work together to achieve a greater success then the one they were initially aiming for. This is a great read for a music lover and all other creative people. ( )

I received an Advanced Reading Copy of Prendergast's book The Frail Days. Although this may not be the best book ever written, I really did enjoy it. The plot is simple and fairly predictable, but I can see being able to book talk this book to some of my reluctant high school readers. The book is short and easy to read which would make it a good choice for some of my students that have a hard time finishing the required 300 pages a marking period.
I also like the band aspect of the book and think it makes it a timely read for kids looking at chasing dreams of their own. They may not achieve the original goal, just like the main characters in this book--performing at the Summer Festival, but find success in other ways.
I like the message and I think reluctant readers and students with a lean toward the arts and music will find some inspiration. ( )
