"From the internationally bestselling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world's most overlooked forces. For the past three years, Jon Ronson has been immersing himself in the world of modern-day public shaming-meeting famous shamees, shamers, and bystanders who have been impacted. This is the perfect time for a modern-day Scarlet Letter-a radically empathetic book about public shaming, and about shaming as a form of social control. It has become such a big part of our lives it has begun to feel weird and empty when there isn't anyone to be furious about. Whole careers are being ruined by one mistake. A transgression is revealed. Our collective outrage at it has the force of a hurricane. Then we all quickly forget about it and move on to the next one, and it doesn't cross our minds to wonder if the shamed person is okay or in ruins. What's it doing to them? What's it doing to us? Ronson's book is a powerful, funny, unique, and very humane dispatch from the frontline, in the escalating war on human nature and its flaws"-- "For the past three years, Jon Ronson has been immersing himself in the world of modern-day public shaming--meeting famous shamees, shamers, and bystanders who have been impacted. It is hard to write about this book in an objective manner. This feeling is amplified not only by Ronson's haughty attitude while reading his own book, but also by the nagging feeling that any criticism of this book could be construed as online shaming. Thus, I want to be short and blunt. Ronson sets out to tell the stories of people he (rightly) sees as victims of shit storms. In his efforts, he proves the truism that being shamed is a crushing experience, being amplified by modern social media. However, Ronson fails to cleary distinguish between cause and effect of these shit storms, neglecting the implications of the former and trying to show the impact of the latter by, putting extra emphasis into the vulgarness of these vicious comments. Ronson completely goes of track in his afterword, when he regrets that a newspaper column reviewing his book has failed to stop abuse on Twitter. I am aware this book is seen as a revelation, but in my opinion, the author fails to provide any insights that go beyond describing awful occurences on Twitter, while the other chapters (e.g. the one on the self-help group) merely accomplishes to show that being shamed is bad.

"[T]he choice of subject for “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” turns out to be gutsy and smart. Without losing any of the clever agility that makes his books so winning, he has taken on truly consequential material and risen to the challenge."

This terrifying study of social media fury is another superb product from brand Ronson, humorous journalist and moralist par excellence
