I'm not much of a reader of poetry (I hope to change that), but I really liked this collection. These were poems from the mid-eighties, written during Carver's sobriety.

What you see here is a portrait of a very happy man. One who had conquered his demons and was ready to enjoy all the little things. They range from joyous (his fantasy about having a big boat party with all his friends), to serious (poetic "interventions" with his daughter Christine, who was heading down the same alcoholic road that he and his ex-wife had been on.

Another one I liked was "The Eagle". During a hike, an eagle dropped a fish right at his feat. Not to create waste from the bird's error, he took the fish home, cooked it and ate it. In doing so, he accepted the blessing of chance. This attitude pervades this collection. Carver is willing to accept happiness not only at the hands of this quirky occurrence, but with all the little prosaic pleasures that life offers. ( )

Raymond Carver schetst een wereld die voor veel mensen wellicht vreemd en ver weg is, maar die toch een heel typische snaar raakt die ik alleen bij Amerikaanse auteurs terug vindt. Misschien is het het beeldende, bijna filmische dat je ook beleeft bij het lezen van sommige Faulknerverhalen of bij Richard Yates (Revolutionary Road). Wat gaf mij zo'n zeldzaam plezier in het lezen van deze korte verhalen? Iedere zin zindert en heeft een doel, schept een sfeer die zich aan je opdringt. De personages zijn scherp verbeeld en dragen een lot met zich mee dat weliswaar zwaar is, maar toch met een zekere manmoedigheid gedragen wordt. Dit in tegenstelling tot de verschrikkelijke nietsnutten waarmee de hoofdpersoon doorgaans te leven heeft. Juweeltjes vond ik het titelverhaal en Olifant. Het laatste gaat over een eindeloze stroom familieleden die allemaal voor even geld nodig hebben. De verteller worstelt 15 pagina's lang, vanaf zin 1, met schuldgevoel zonder dat je te weten komt waarom hij zich verplicht voelt aan al deze nietsnutten. Iets vergelijkbaars zien we ook in het verhaal "Dozen" waarin hij worstelt met een moeder die voortdurend wil verhuizen, die een thuis wil en het niet kan krijgen. De kracht van al deze verhalen is, geloof ik, dat er niet wordt toegewerkt naar een ontknoping of een clou, maar dat ze als het ware willekeurige fragmenten zijn uit een uitzichtloos leven.
