Detective Paige Whiskey comes from a long line of witches. They may not all be the most powerful, but they are outspoken and supportive of their community. She alone has no gifts. She can't summon fire, can't read minds. She knows the arcane. She's studied it. That, along with her connection to the Whiskey Witches, lands her some pretty strange cases. Like the sacrificial murders of St. Francisville, Louisiana. There's a killer on the loose, choosing people in a vain attempt to raise a demon. Not just any demon, though. A man born long ago, made a demon in order to protect the Gate to Hell. Together with demon hunter, Dexx Colt, her kitchen-witch grandmother, and her paranormal investigator brother-in-law, they unravel a conspiracy far bigger than a few simple murders, and re-discover Paige's gift. She's a demon summoner and she's key to the killer's plan.… (mehr)

Detective Paige Whiskey is the only one in the family without any magic... or so she thinks. When called to assist in solving a series of occult murders she finds out she isn't as powerless as she thinks.
Together with the demon hunter Dexx and some (questionable) allies she will try to unravel the mysteries of the murders (hopefully) before she can be used to open the Gate of Hell.

my take on the book:
I liked it a lot! :D
The character development was very good, we had some insight in the thoughts and reasoning of both Paige and Dexx. You got a good feel for them and as such it was easy to picture yourself being there, solving the mystery and fighting baddies.
I feel that not everything has been said about her memory wipe and the blocking of her magic, but that might (hopefully) come in the next book.
The flow of the story was good. Some parts of the book (near the end) took a bit too long in my opinion, but did not 'pause' the book as it were, so I didn't rly mind. Some grammar errors here and there but again it didn't bother me.

As I really enjoyed this book, I'm putting the next few books on my TBR pile. Eager to find out what will happen with Paige and Dexx (and will they have some steamy sex?), what will they do now? Will Paige be able to overcome her issues? So many questions :D ( )

Whiskey Witches - Episodes 1-4
By: S. M. Blooding
Narrated by: Kalinda Little
Series: Whiskey Witches, Book 1
I really enjoyed this audible book. She is a demon summoner and a detective. A summoner also calls to demons especially when someone captures her and draws signs on her. He is a demon hunter. They are best friends if she agrees or not. She has a demon she calls to ask information off, almost like a friend. Live is different in Paige's life. Love this story! There is so much here! Suspense, action, thrills, magic, heartbreak, demons, angels, and more!
The narrator has a rough voice but fits perfect for this story! She does all the voices perfect and keeps the moods and emotions flowing wonderfully! ( )

Whiskey Witches is pretty fun brain candy! It’s light, humorous, and has a bit of an edge. Paige Whiskey is an entertaining detective. I loved her foul mouth. Totally in keeping with her Whiskey heritage… except she doesn’t have any powers. Well, so she thinks. We quickly learn that nearly all her family is in the know about some necessary memory blocks that were put in place and it looks like those blocks are breaking down. This makes Paige a confused and dangerous individual. There’s going to be some butt-kicking indeed!

There’s a lot of nods to a popular TV show, Supernatural, in this book but I think folks who haven’t seen the show will enjoy this story nonetheless. Paige is the female version of Dean Winchester and her sidekick and romantic interest, Dexx Colt, is yet another version of Dean Winchester. So, yeah, it was like Dean & Dean working together and eventually sharing some steamy moments.

I’ll just give you a moment to fully visualize that.

… And we’re back. There’s plenty of action and then some more action. Most of the book is action. There’s a little character development here and there but for the most part, they walk onto the page fully formed with personal agendas, favorite swear words, and plenty of weapons. I just really had a lot of fun listening to this book.

Granma Alma Whiskey was a blunt force of wind. I loved her character, especially that name (which I have only encountered once in real life). I really want her backstory. She has been instrumental in getting witches out of the closet and into mainstream military and police work.

Balinor often had me chuckling out loud. He’s a well spoken polite demon who calls Paige, Peanut. Ha! every time he did that, I laughed a little. Who has the balls to repeatedly call Paige, Peanut? So, yeah, I like Balinor even if I wasn’t sure if he was a good guy or a bad guy for much of the book.

The strengths of Whiskey Witches are also the weaknesses. There’s so much action that there’s hardly a break for something deeper, like some character development. The parallels with Supernatural (being a Hunter, Colt + Paige = Dean Winchester, demons, angels, nephilim! oh, my!) make the story line a bit predictable. Still, with that I give this a solid 4/5 stars based on entertainment alone.

The Narration: Kalinda Little was a perfect fit for Paige Whiskey. She sounded just as butt-kicking charming as I expected Paige would. Little obviously brought her enthusiasm for this story to the table; she was great with all the action scenes, the swearing, and the humor. Sometimes I did want a little more masculinity from some of her male characters, yet all her character voices were distinct. 4/5 stars on the narration.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by S.M. Blooding. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. ( )

urban-fantasy, demon-hunter, demons, ghosts, witches, serial-killer, family-dynamics, law-enforcement, paranormal

Very different from other urban fantasy/demon hunter books I've read. Not a good or bad thing, but certainly fascinating. The publisher's blurb gives a good intro, but there is so much more. There is a pervasive sense of urgency, snarky comments, convoluted family involvements, and a Louisiana police chief plus an FBI agent who have an inkling about the paranormal. The characters certainly are and are very well developed. It's really, REALLY, worth the money to read it.
But I was happy to get it as Whispersync on the cheap. Kalinda Little adds a lot to the emotional tones of the characters and the tale itself. ( )
