Human trafficking of women and children, enslaved in prostitution, bought and sold, used and abused. Who will stand up for them, defend them, save them? How can an online presence affect people, politics, legalities, courts…The anonymity of cyber activism. I do not want to spoil any of the goodies contained in Cold Moon, the third book of Cara and Roarke’s story, so I will just throw out some hints and ask you…what would you do? Evil…can you see it, smell it, touch it, feel it? Is it alive? Do you do something about it yourself? Is it self defense, if you know evil is coming your way, and you take it out first? My emotions are raging in anger and disgust. I know this goes on, day in and day out, and I wonder if those who, in real life, try to stem the flow of evil feel it is too big, there are too many. One by one they WILL fall. “There is something larger at work…a force beyond the simply human. A female vengeance against outrages.” Santa Muerte “Sometimes death for one is salvation for another.” I love the dark and dangerous, unique and original, direction Alexandrar Sokoloff takes in this story. I am afraid to google some of the online forums she talks about. I am afraid of what I will find out. Will evil know I am looking and come for me? Spreading like wild fire, Cara becomes elevated to folk hero status, likened to Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte or, colloquially, Santa Muerte (Spanish for Saint Death). I’m not going to go into detail on the story line, as I think the peeling away of the info is what makes this series so enjoyable. The story is well written, many of the characters are already know to readers of books 1 & 2, and some of the characters are expanded, and have more page time in this book. I really felt a connection, and chemistry between Roarke and Cara in this book. I haven’t seen any info on the number of books that may comprise the series, so who knows maybe something will come of it down the line. The book doesn't end with a cliff hanger, but it’s open ended, allowing for another book to pick up where this one left off. The book is lengthy, with the pace varying, there is some time spent discussing female serial killers, and there several murders. The overall feel of the book is not one of a twisted killer, and I think each reader will have to decide if Cara’s brand if justice is right, or if she has no right to be judge, jury and executioner. I enjoyed the book, and actually hope that there will be follow on books, but I’m not sure how long Cara, can remain the lead character, without the stories becoming redundant in action and feeling. As a reader, I would welcome, a new twisted lead character and a jump into the psyche of the killer, surrounded by some of the characters we have already met in the series. As a former San Franciscan, the locations within the city, and other California sites added to my reading enjoyment. I grabbed this book on announce day from Kindle Unlimited, and was contacted shortly thereafter by the Author, and was told that NetGalley had the book available. Since I will be posting my review to both sites, I would like to thank NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer publishing for a copy of the book. Series are the Kings of the publishing world, right now, but I am not really a royalist, if you know what I mean. Call me Cromwell. For me I think that I can count on two hands the number of series that have consistently rocked me from beginning to end. Add another one. Although this series is not over, Cold Moon, by Alexandra Sokoloff, continues what the first two books of The Huntress Series started, and amazingly, goes even farther. This book is still the story of the Huntress, Cara, and FBI Agent Roarke, and his team. What makes me believe that this series will just get better and better is that the story expands, and Ms. Sokoloff brings great depth and complexity to a tale that was already very good. Singh and Epps have more time in this book, along with social worker Rachel, and Cara’s cousin, Erin. With their expanding rolls the extra characters enrich the novel. Plot-wise The Reaper is dead, and Cara is in custody, but there is precious little evidence, and only one witness, the mercurial and unstable runaway Jade, who is also an exceptionally well-drawn character with an expanded role. Cara’s crimes, though unproven have taken on a life of their own, and her story goes viral. She has become a folk hero of sorts, and several times she is linked with La Santisima Muerte, a female folk Saint venerated in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. A group of hackers helps boost the story and Cara begins to morph into an iconic archetypical character, an Avenging Angel. The story grows in depth, and we follow more characters even as Cara and Roarke continue their deadly pas de deux. Ms. Sokoloff hits all the right notes in the way she deals with the story slipping out into the wide world. Her grasp of the societal and sociological aspects of this story is assured, and most importantly, never boring or staid. What makes this so gripping is that even as they are caught up in these grand events both Cara and Roarke are still people, and watching them try to maintain control of their lives, their identities, and their fates, is compelling. Ms. Sokoloff should get extra credit for her skill here. These characters struggle, and take their lumps, but I never got the feeling that they would give up. Both Cara and Roarke have reached the point where they feel like real people, and that is rare. What makes this book so good is that these two solid believable characters are caught up in a story that is quickly getting out of their hands, yet both of them seem to want to just stop. The relationship between the two, always good, just got a bunch better in this book. There’s a real poignancy in their scenes together, and the contrast is only made stronger by a plot that’s as fast as a Cheetah with a rocket strapped to its ass. As far as it goes, you could read Cold Moon as a stand-alone novel, but I would say that you are cheating yourself out of a hell of an experience. So read the first two books, then read Cold Moon. Cara Lindstrom has been captured and is awaiting trial but her story is far from over. Agent Roarke is drawn to Cara and can't seem to stay away from her even though he knows that he should. Despite the fact that the team knows that Cara is responsible for a lot of deaths, they have only one case to move forward with which hinges on the testimony of a teenage sex worker. When their witness goes missing, a string of events begins that brings a lot of things into question.
This was a story that hooked me from the very beginning. I wondered where the story would go since Cara was in custody but I had nothing to worry about because Roake and the other agents had plenty on their agenda. I like the fact that this book really made me question who the criminals really were. Cara has committed crimes but the victims of her crimes are not innocents. All of the characters felt very authentic complete with their own unique set of flaws.
R.C. Bray does a fantastic job with this series. He does a great job with a large cast of varied characters. I think that his voice is really perfect for this type of book and I found that his delivery added to the excitement of the story. I found it very easy to listen to this book for hours at a time.
I would recommend this series to others. It is an exciting series with great characters and an exciting mystery. I think that the profiling aspect of the story is extremely well done. I can't wait to get started on the next installment in this series.
