A collection of over thirty knitting patterns inspired by popular science fiction and fantasy culture includes designs for the scarf worn by Darcy in Thor, muggle inspired sweater, and six-sided dice pillows. "Are you ready to embrace your inner geek? This fun and fashionable compendium of knitting patterns definitely leans toward the Dark Side--but who says the Dark Side can't be chic and colorful, too? With projects ranging from easy to advanced, there's something here for everyone: sci-fi geeks, dice rollers, and fantasy enthusiasts alike. And if you're less into the culture and just need something unique to hold your comic book collection, author Joan of Dark has that covered, too. Inside you'll find fun and funky projects modeled by some very familiar faces, including René Auberjonois of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and his Blue Box Scarf, John Carpenter and his Asylum Comic Book Cover, and George R. R. Martin with his trusty knitted Dire Wolf! Whether you consider yourself aligned with the Chaotic Good or take a more Neutral Evil approach to life (and knitting), Geek Knits has everything you need to dress the part"--… (mehr)

The picture of George R.R. Martin with a knitted dire wolf on his shoulder is simply adorable and Neil Gaiman channelling his inner Sherlock Holmes is brilliant. Fortunately there's also a picture that shows the shape of the dire wolf; one or two items of clothing have a fashion picture and a schematic but not enough photography to get a sense of the garment's fit and drape.

Clever projects. The Muggle Artifacts sweater is outstanding. And there's a Bunnicula! I'm now considering (a) introducing all my grandchildren to Bunnicula (The Celery Stalks At Midnight and subsequent books in the series) AND (b) if I can figure out how to legibly label the sides, making a 20-sided die inspired by the brilliant D-2020 manufactured by Storm Crow, with a typical 2020 disaster on each face. This has some fabulous patterns!

Various scarves and stuffies, of course, but my husband now longs for a vest made with the "Muggle Artifact" pattern- I figure I'll just knit an edging instead of the sleeves.

The Dragon and Alien Pet are adorable, as are the Dire Wolf and of course Bunnicula, and the Alien Snow Beast balaclava is a hoot!

And if you ever felt the need for variously-sided huge dice, here are patterns for 6, 8, and 20.

All in all, they look like a lot of fun, and range from the practical and even elegant- like the Poison Ivy wrap- through the wild.

They do not look to me like being especially quick projects, though, so I'd suggest a level of dedication before heading into one. Still- fun and inspiring!

I didn't give it a full 5 stars because for several of the projects there was no plain photograph of how the item looked finished, just in use and generally in artistic poses. ( )
