It has been a whopping 8 years and I still can't fathom to continue this book any further. I believe I reached only 19%, but I could never vibe with the writing style. I have gotten more used to books written in present tense over the years. Even if this book had been written in past tense, it had so many infodumps and lack of direction (not to mention a protagonist that felt insanely jarring), I would have dnfed it anyways.

It seems like other reviewers have felt in a similar way as me. I suggest readers to test the waters and if they can't vibe with it in the first 5%, then to stop reading further. Sadly, this wasn't the book for me. ( )

My Synopsis / Review ~

Everealm is a very charming book. I love romantic conflict. The main story follows Breestlin (Bree) the new queen of Junacave, a prosperous and peaceful kingdom in Everealm. Her father, the preceding king has just passed away, she is just crowned Queen, then all of the sudden she sees her long lost summer love, Rowan, the boy who gave her, her first kiss, also the one who took her innocence. And then he disappears. For 7 years. And now he shows up again - at her coronation of all places!

What she doesn’t know, is that Rowan still misses her. But he was just a lowly knights son, and she was the queen. When her parents found out about their trysts, they sent him away. They trained him to be an assassin, hardened him to be a cold stone mercenary.

All was going smoothly in Junacave for about two minutes, then, out of the blue, a severed head basically shows up one her doorstep and an uncle she barely knows, threatens to conquer the kingdom. And now her kingdoms last form of protection, a graying old Wizard, is on his deathbed and they must rush to convince his long lost grandson to help in their defense. An entertaining journey ensues, with Rowan now partnered at Bree’s side, and long awkward silences followed by incessant compulsive insults. It only gets better as the story continues, but you'll just have to read the book.

Note ~ This book does contain mature context and language. Recommended for ages 16 .

If You've Read the Book ~

My Favorite part is honestly the prologue. It's tugs on the sinews of my heart and I catch 'the feels'. I love it. It just really sets the tone of the book and there is nothing better than a great beginning. Can anybody else relate?

I also love the scene with Dagan and Sidonie in the woods!

Maybe my expectations were too high for this this book, maybe I just wasn't prepared, I don't know, but I found Everealm to be okay. Not horrible, but not amazing. Did I like it? Sure. Was it a good read? Yes. I just thought it would appeal to me a lot more than it did. However, the cover art is gorgeous. 3.5 out of 5 stars. ( )

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.
Bree is a princess in Everealm. She has been in love with Rowan since she was fourteen years old. Unfortunately, he is not considered suitable and the fact that they went a little too far at one point means that he has been sent away to work as an assassin. When her father dies, Bree becomes Queen and there is the somewhat predictable story where Bree, Rowan, Dagan the wizard and others have to fight to save the kingdom from Bree's wicked uncle Silas and his wife.
The cover is lovely; that and the style of writing led me to believe that this was a YA fairy tale story. The book needs an editor (in my opinion). There is head-hopping between characters and a lot of poor phrasing that takes the reader out of the story. For example, "he certainly preferred her in red or deep green to match her eyes" made me wonder about the color of her eyes. Another example, "her body had rubbed against his groin, making it hard to concentrate on where he was leading his horse. And he was forced to rearrange his trousers to cover up his excitement caused by it". Was he excited by leading his horse or her body? There are a lot of sentences like this that just were not clear and stops the reader in order to try to understand what the author is saying. I can forgive a few instances of this, but there were too many throughout the entire book. I think an editor would have corrected this and made the book much better.
And this brings me to my second issue. This is definitely not a YA book. There are explicit sexual scenes of rape and violence. I don't particularly care if there is sex in a book, but here they are inserted somewhat gratuitously and I found them jarring. I don't think they were necessary and again they take the reader out of the story.
This book was a disappointment and I would not recommend it. ( )
