An American heiress married for her dowry. When Victoria fell in love with the Earl of Pembroke, she never imagined he'd heartlessly wed, bed, and abandon her in the countryside. After he suddenly returns, determined to prove to her he's a changed man, she's not about to forgive him, trust him, or succumb to his scorching kisses. A future duke trapped by obligation. Will has devoted his life to enraging his loathsome father by creating one scandal after the next. Duty forces him back to the wife he resents, but he isn't prepared for the raw desire she makes him feel. Seducing her will hardly be a tedious task. Guarding his heart, however, is another matter entirely. A marriage of convenience no more. What begins in deception and necessity turns into an attraction neither can deny. Can their newfound passion keep them together forever, or will the truth tear them apart? Contains mature themes.… (mehr)

Oh man, this was kind of painful for me. I don't like to give single stars, but this was awful. It was shallow, the characters were nincompoops (I don't think I've ever said that about book characters before, but it feels apt), and hardly anything at all happens. Lots of inconsistencies, the depth of a paperclip, it was just all around poorly crafted. The heroine waffles back and forth seemingly every 30 seconds between despising him for abandoning her in the country while he cavorted in town for a few months (all before the story starts), and loving him even though apparently they've hardly spent any time together before or after their marriage. The hero goes from not caring a whit about her to being quite taken with her in-between scenes right at the start and with hardly any discernible cause (I can only imagine it was because she didn't just take him back immediately? Maybe that intrigued him?). Both of them spend the majority of the book thinking 'I couldn't possibly forgive him!.. COULD I?!?' 'I couldn't possibly care about her!.. COULD I?!?' ugh. They're already married, there is absolutely zero reason not to try to make it work if they feel even remotely tempted to. The hero's life altering childhood experience was suspect, the heroines threats to divorce him against his will seem unlikely, somehow his father received her dowry instead of him, even though he wasn't a minor or anything? It all felt very contrived just to push the story in the desired direction. Speaking of plot, two thirds of the way through and the only thing that had happened besides their waffling and sexual interactions was that a tree branch fell on them. That's it. Later there was a mistake from his past that reared up and a little family drama added, but that's about all that happened in the entire thing. Rather than show us things they were mostly just told, lots of 'he said convincingly' rather than describe what that might actually look like, and that sort of thing. They were full of strong feelings, but few of them felt believable to me. It felt very much like someone's first attempt at writing a book and I started to convince myself that must be it, but no I see she wrote at least a dozen before it. =/ The intimate scenes were decent I guess? I can't think of any other aspect that was actually. I have the second book on audio already from the library, so maybe I'll still try that one, (sped up doubletime so it's less of an investment), I like to give authors more than one shot, but honestly I'm quite hesitant. -- Nope, I just read the blurb and a few reviews on the other one and it sounds very, very, similar. Maybe I would have ended up giving IT a whole *2* stars, but life is short and there are a lot of other books out there, I'm cutting line. ( )

DNF.

I just didn't like the writing style.
Not for me.

it was ok. Not very noteworthy or involved though. the start had great potential but then the h became very watered down and nice, not very assertive. ( )
