Where the Heart Lands is the story of Lucy Litchfield, a middle-aged woman who reinvents her life after a suicide attempt, and Addie, a young girl with a dark past. Lucy and Jack are married 25 years when she finds out he has fathered a child with a much younger woman. When forced to live in the same house as her estranged husband, Lucy circles a dark abyss, ruminating on her failed life choices and unable to see the future. Hope arrives just in time when Lucy learns that she has inherited an old farmhouse in southeastern Minnesota from her beloved, eccentric great-aunt. She decides to make the move, but begins to regret it when the locals prove to be less than friendly, until she meets her quirky new neighbor Addie Oswald. Young Addie survives brutal sexual abuse at the hands of her uncle, after her parents abandon her to follow God's will. A kind hobo helps her escape, giving her a new name and finding her a family "far away." She thrives in the care of a Mennonite couple, eventually finding true love with a handsome Mennonite man. Together they begin raising their children and build a life on the family farm in southern Minnesota, right next door to the same house that Lucy later inherits. When the two women meet, they fuel a passion that could save the one, but destroy the other. Will they find shelter or destruction in this ramshackle home on the prairie?… (mehr)

I received a copy of this book through Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

Very well written with heartfelt characters. Bear perectly captures the emotions and struggles that the characters face.

A simple story but it is the characters that truly makes this book stand out. ( )

I thoroughly enjoyed "Where the Heart Lands". I was especially thrilled that it kept me engaged as during a long day in a waiting room. I was eager to keep reading both Lucy and Addie's journeys and how the author brought them together. My favorite line was "The threat of heartbreak, the fragile filament of feeling in a field of ever-changing frailty." Wow! The growing, changing, and live learning of the characters was a pleasure to read.

Where the Heart Lands was a book that I had to finish in 1 evening. It features 2 feisty women who respond to difficult, challenging circumstances with strength, humor, craziness, passion, persistence, and support from other characters, depending on the particular situation that they faced. I had to keep reading this book because I wanted to know how the characters would deal with the problems that confronted them. I look forward to reading more work by this author who created characters that surprised and inspired me.

I am not typically a reader of fiction. I mostly read for educational or self help purposes. However when a Freind mine and text me into reading "Where The Heart Lands" dispite my lake of attention span for fiction. I began reading it and couldn't put it down. The characters were so well developed I quickly became attached to the outcome of the story. After a few chapters I almost put it down because to the trauma to the young girl(one of the main characters). The abuse she indured reminded me of some dark times in my own childhood. But the story soon shifts into this young girls journey to rescue herself and create the life she longed for.
