First let me say that Blood & Rain is a whole lotta story. It had enough material in there for three books. And I'm not talking about length, I'm talking about the stuff that took place in this unbelievable story. The story jumped right into the mix of it with best buds Rahne and Sammi. Sammi the more outgoing of the two dragged education and career focused Rahne to a new club where she meets her supposed Soul Mate. I instantly liked these girls and how their friendship worked even with their different personalities.
So Rahne met her future guy Lucian and was instantly swept away by the emotions she never felt before for the opposite sex or expected to ever feel. In this story this instant attraction worked for me, I'm also a sucker for the soul mate angle in stories. It was also evident that Lucian was instantly drawn in by Rahne. This is one of the things that keeps me in love with the Vampire sub-genre. I just love how swoon-worthy connections of the heart between the Hero and Heroine can be. I say connections because this wasn't exactly love at first site for Rahne and Lucian but a very strong need to be around each other and explore the possibilities. However, of course Rahne go and spoil it by fighting her feelings for him not wanting to stray from her plan of education and career first, love second, maybe. Lucian also fought it too because he was still dealing with being hurt from a previous relationship.
Although it's clear that Rahne was the primary focus of the story her friend Sammi and Marcus, Lucian's friend also had a big part in the book. They were always front and center when it comes to do with anything Rahne and Lucian as well as having their own stuff going on, and certainly made this story so dynamic.
I liked Rahne and Lucian as a couple and I loved how their story grew and became this almost epic love story. I think they were so alike in personality, I didn't realize it till the end how much alike they are. I also like Sammi and Marcus, I would say they were the ones to lighten the mood of the story. I liked being in Sammi's head, she is so insulting, always referring to people as idiot and cow but it was clearly a term of endearment, especially since it was her friend Rahne who got the brunt of the cow reference.
Some of the things that bothered me was how developments and back stories just came up out of nowhere it seems. I had no preparation for some of the things that came up. I was in a state of shock a few times as the story developed. I got a little irritated at Rahne for the way she dealt with things, she was one ball of emotional roller-coaster. There was a time in the story where this would have been acceptable but I thought she took it to a new level sometimes and sometimes her freaks were actually funny, when she wasn't crying that is. There is also some editing issues with the book, but I've read many a books with rampant errors and was able to look pass it if I loved the story.
Okay, this review it getting out of hand so I will try and sum it up. I will say what was most enjoyable about this book was the fact that I wan't bored once. Frustrated sometimes, either with the characters or the way things were flowing but I was so captivated that I couldn't wait to see where it went. It definitely sated my Vampire withdrawals.
