My rating for this book is for its content, which is early twentieth century erotic flagellation literature (M/F). Prospective readers should be aware, however, that this content was published, word-for-word, page-by-page, by Grove Press in 1986, four years before the 1990 date of this volume, under the title 'Miss Jolly. A Romance of the Civil War'. There, its author is given as 'Anonymous' rather than Richard Manton. Now it is conceivable that Mr Manton has simply broken cover, but it puzzles me that this edition gives no reference at all to the earlier publication, and the possibility that purchasers may be misled clearly arises.
