Title: Of Moose and Men Author: Torry Martin & Doug Peterson Pages: 224 Year: 2016 Publisher: Harvest House Publishing My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. This book is about the hilarious misadventures of Torry Martin and his friend Rob in the beautiful but dangerous state of Alaska. I say dangerous, but only because of the bears and other predators that live in the wilderness. In each hilarious misadventure that Torry reiterates, he finds God working in mysterious ways. For this hippie, his trials work to make his spiritual life stronger in his walk with God, which is an inspiration to all of us (however hilarious). I would recommend this book to others for its clean humor and insights that God can use anyone, even a misfit like Torry Martin to use his gifts to inspire others to find God. At the end of each chapter, he makes some excellent points such as at the end of the final chapter he states that Jesus doesn’t promise an easy life once you have accepted Him, but things are easier to bear knowing we will be with Him in the end. I like also how he writes this book with a wonderful sense of humor. I hope others who read this book not only read it for a good laugh, but also find the spiritual insights the author(s) give that in the midst of life’s craziness our Heavenly Father is always with us. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255. “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.” I have not heard of either of the authors of this book before, but boy was I in for a treat. I have a great love of books and each one is a treasure to me. This book made me laugh so hard I was crying while trying to tell my hubby some of the things in the book. I will never forget the bear story. Can you imagine you and a bear in the wilderness with pots and pans to arm yourself with? There are great stories throughout the book that have insightful lessons for all of us. The beautiful way Alaska was described made me think of the world that God created for us to enjoy and explore. The authors really had their hands full at times with mishaps and misunderstandings. Along their journey, they experienced surprises, answered prayers and a closer relationship with God. I loved the story about them praying for a table. God really answered their prayer that day with three tables. He knew what they needed and gave them exactly what they needed. The best part of the story is how they talked about God "uses broken , used up people to carry out His plans." The tables they were blessed with were not new, but to them it was perfect. Do we dismiss people because they look less than perfect to us? We need to learn to trust God and not discard what we think is unusable . Each chapter is filled with adventure and a reference to a story from the Bible along with scriptures. There was one story that really made me think about myself. One of the author's was talking about being bullied as a child because of his weight. I was teased as a child because I was so thin kids called me toothpick. I was very shy and hated everything about myself. Through his story I truly understood what it meant to see others the way Jesus does. I loved when he said," But the great truth is that we no longer have to look at ourselves the way the world does. We only need look at ourselves the way God does. And He thinks we're super. " Thank you for writing a book that is funny and teaches us to rely on God. I received this book from Book Fun.org and the option to leave my honest opinion of it was up to me. Torry Martin--a comedian, actor, and hippie--fled from California to the wilderness of Alaska, searching for answers to life's big questions. He found what he was looking for...and a lot more! A moose got its head stuck in Torry's window. A reindeer was trapped in his kitchen. A bear almost prevented him from reaching his airplane. He once woke up frozen to his cabin floor. Like the Israelites of old, Torry experienced plenty of miracles and mishaps in the wilderness. And like them, he came face-to-face with God and was changed forever. Each of these true stories of Torry's hilarious blunders and misfortunes contains a nugget of truth, but one theme prevails: If God can reclaim and repurpose Torry Martin's life, He can do the same for you and those you love.
