The story is about a middle-aged woman without a future, because she doesn't want any of the futures that society has directed her towards, mostly presented as mother or corpse, and who is therefore obsessed with the past. But the past isn't a place so she can only go back there inside her own head, except her own memories aren't enough for her and the people from her past don't want to share the insides of their heads with her. At the end of the book she embraces a future in a place and social role, as a rural spinster, that society has told her are both undesirable. The style of writing is descriptive. It presents and dissects without interpreting. The author explicitly separates this work from crime novels in which people are dismembered and then interpreted as clues, from the work of psychologists in which people's minds are broken down and interpreted, from the work of therapists (or shamans) in which people's emotions (or spirits) are anatomised and interpreted. The descriptive imagery is creative enough that it occasionally momentarily veers into bizarre or surreal disconnection. A typical pop-literary Man Booker International shortlist novel. Ma il bilancio è deludente: Sonia è una traduttrice, quindi lavora da sola, con ritmi e orari che le lasciano spazi sempre più vuoti in una vita sempre più vuota. Hun prøver at gøre det, hun bliver lært at gøre - spejl, skulder, blink - og alligevel sidder hun fast. Dejlig tekst at læse, så bogen blev hurtigt slugt, men selve historien og hovedpersonens udvikling interessede mig ikke det store. * Ilyen értelemben tehát téves ezt a könyvet Dánia-kritikaként olvasni, egyfelől mert egyetemes problémákról szól (Detroitban éppúgy játszódhatna, mint Koppenhágában), másfelől meg ugye ez pont az a szöveg, amire egy rutinos Szvoren Edina-olvasó azt mondaná, hogy „na bravó, irigylem a problémáitokat”. (Szerintem nagyon jó tréfa Nors részéről, hogy főszereplője épp népszerű véres skandináv krimiket fordít, miközben autós oktatójától retteg – ezzel finoman jelezve, hogy a valódi és mesterségesen konstruált félelmek között micsoda szakadék van.)
