I received When Sean Loves Rusty from the author through the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s Don’t Buy My Love program for an honest review. This is book 6 in the series, ‘Bayou Boys’ and is a collection of the books 1-5. The stories are told in third person through the eyes of both Sean and Rusty who have been friends since grade school and grow to become lovers.

Since this is a collection of five books, I’m going to give a short overview of each. The series covers the time from Sean and Rusty’s first year in college, to their move to Boston, events in Boston and New Orleans to finally conclude with their wedding. This series is a character driven story backed by everyday ordinary events rather than action packed. There’s quite a bit of monologue and emo drama from both characters which was too much for me, but some people may like the emo drama.

Meant to Be

I started to read this story and it sounded very familiar to something I’d read before. I realized this story was originally written for the M/M Romance Group’s 2013 Love Has No Boundaries event and that’s where I read it before. I already have a separate review for this story so I’m just going to provide a link for that which you can read here:

Moving On

This is the story of Sean returning to town to help drive all their possessions from New Orleans to their new home in Boston. The time apart has been stressful on both of the boys. There are many anxious moments between the two with accusations, misunderstandings and lots of insecurities. Rusty has always been the one supporting Sean and has had his family around him. Now the tables are turned. Rusty is now leaving his family behind and he feels lost and alone. Sean has made new friends and has a good job. Rusty feels he’s no longer needed. What Sean has actually tried to do is keep busy so he won’t miss Rusty so much. He’s trying to make Rusty proud of him and to make sure Rusty will feel comfortable when he arrives in Boston. I didn’t like Rusty very much in this book; he was self-centered and focused on his own situation without thinking about what Sean had gone through and how he was trying to help.

I hadn’t noticed so much in the first story, but this story had a slow, depressing voice to it. Maybe that was the author’s intention, but I felt like I was dragging through mud and I wanted to roll my eyes at all the drama and misunderstandings.

The one part I had difficulty with was the very beginning. Rusty is at the airport and I thought he was waiting for Sean to pick him up. I think the reason is that it’s implied in the previous story that Rusty is moving to Boston so Rusty would have to meet Sean in Boston. This confusing start pulled me out of the story before I got into it. I even went back and read the ending to the first story thinking I’d missed something.

Tricked Up the Treats

In this story, Rusty enters both Sean and himself in a Halloween Drag Queen contest without Sean’s knowledge. Sean has difficulty with dressing up in drag or acting in any way feminine because of his father who is a violent homophobe. When Rusty tells Sean about the contest, it puts added stress on Sean and their relationship. Again, there are many misunderstandings and taking matters into their own hands without discussing with the partner. It seems they haven’t learned much yet from previous times.

I don’t know if it’s the author’s style of writing, or she’s writing it this way for the stories. There isn’t much of an emotional range so far other than sad, anxious, upset or worried even when Rusty and Sean are having fun. I would’ve liked to have felt more happiness at the end of the story rather than the same flat emotional tone so far carried through the first three stories.

Jingle My Bell

It’s the Christmas holidays and Sean has traded in his prize win from the Halloween contest to one of the other contestants for plane tickets back to New Orleans for Rusty. We learn that Rusty still considers New Orleans home and not home with Sean. Sean however, is feeling happier in Boston with his work and new friends. We also see that both Rusty and Sean still lie about how they feel when the other asks questions and both hide their true feelings and make snide comments to provoke fights.

It makes me wonder why these two guys are even together. They love each other, but they conflict with each other quite a bit and have very different ideas of home. Rusty doesn’t understand Sean’s feelings and expects him to just forget about his past and move on, which shows me what a privileged life Rusty has had. He keeps thinking about how it’s all about Sean and how’s he sacrificed so much for Sean. That also tells me that Rusty has pretty much had his own way in life, that when he has to start sacrificing for someone else he throws a tantrum. Rusty’s a pampered spoiled boy that has had things handed to him. And when it’s time for him to grow up, he goes kicking and screaming. Rusty whined about all he did for Sean and couldn’t see how Sean knew and appreciated that, even putting himself in very uncomfortable situations for Rusty to make Rusty happy.

The author eventually had the characters voice what they loved about the other. Thank goodness both of the MCs do some growing up in this chapter. Sean I can understand that his fear held him back and his life was hell living at home. He had a lot to overcome. By the end of this book, both boys start to understand how the other felt because I wanted to smack Rusty upside the head for his privileged, entitled attitude.

For Better or Worse

This story is about the preparations for the upcoming wedding, the wedding and an interesting change in Sean’s job position. These scenes were just backdrops to the angst both of the MCs go through.

It took me to get to the last story in this book set to finally realize one of the main things that bothers me about the writing. I’m a dialogue person and even though these stories do have dialogue, they are heavy on monologue… emo-drama monologue. I don’t like lots of monologue and especially when it’s emo-drama.

Throughout these books, I was waiting to see if I could identify with the characters but for some reason I couldn’t. The emotional drama of the two only seemed to push me away. I didn’t have much sympathy for them and maybe it was the style of writing, but I felt like I was watching Sean and Rusty from the outside, never identifying with them despite the monologues of how they felt.

Even though the MCs are OK characters, it’s Rusty’s family that I enjoyed the most. The Duchenes, especially the mother and father, are sympathetic, caring people and their love for both Rusty and Sean was obvious. I think Dad and Mom Duchene were my favorite characters in this series.

Technically wise, there are missing and duplicate words that can probably be fixed in the next addition. The epub formatting was good.

I know this book has received good reviews from many readers, but the tone of voice, the drama, the loads of monologue and Rusty doing my head in, it was all too much. I’m going to have to give When Sean Loves Rusty 3-3.5 stars averaging out to 3 Stars.
