"In Calia Read's electrifying and steamy novel of psychological suspense, a handsome stranger shatters a beautiful young woman's picture-perfect vision of her past. Hold your breath and count to ten. Soon it will be over before it ever began. No matter how many times Victoria Donovan repeats that phrase to herself, she's still trapped behind the walls of a mental institution. Once upon a time, her life was like a fantasy: Wes, the handsome fiance, followed by a storybook wedding and a white picket fence. But then a picture-perfect marriage twisted into something sinister. And as Victoria's world warped from dream to nightmare, her husband's obsessions pushed her beyond the breaking point. At first Fairfax Mental Health Institute seems like a safe place for Victoria to heal with her baby, Evelyn, and to hide from Wes, presumed dead by everyone except Victoria. Her husband is still alive, she has no doubt: He slips into her room at night to torment and tempt her. One smoldering kiss and she's powerless. Of course, no one believes her about these visits. When she meets a sexy, mysterious stranger intent on helping her recall her past, Victoria isn't sure she can trust him. But deep in her heart, she also knows that the only way out of Fairfax is to remember the way she came in. Unhinge is intended for mature audiences. Praise for Calia Read's Unravel "A sexy, mysterious, and enthralling story. Calia Read's words are so captivating, they'll hold you hostage and throw you into loops you'll never see coming."--Claire Contreras, author of There Is No Light in Darkness"-- "In this sequel to Unravel, a visit from a handsome stranger shatters a beautiful young woman's vision of her picture-perfect past. Victoria can't recall much of her life before she came to Fairfax Hospital, but she prefers it that way. She holds her beautiful baby daughter, Evelyn, every day and that's enough...isn't it? But when Evelyn is taken from her, Victoria's world begins to fray at the seams. It becomes apparent to her that the hospital walls aren't the only obstacles standing between her and the outside world--Victoria has constructed a hall of mirrors deep inside, every false image a distraction from the trauma of her past life. A white picket fence, a family on the way...yet something feels amiss in her memories of a happy marriage. When a handsome stranger begins visiting Victoria, pressing her to remember her past, she struggles to separate real memories from refracted images she has created, knowing at last that only the truth can set her free"--… (mehr)

Unhinge is everything I loved about Unravel just...more.
Funny enough when I first found this on Netgalley last fall I hadn't initially realized it was by the same author that wrote Unravel. Once I made that connection well, that's what sold me on this book.

Unhinge is beautiful and dark and it's absolutely perfect.
What I loved most was that I never really had any clue as to what happened to land Victoria in Fairfax or what lead her to believe so fiercely that a doll was her daughter. And just when I thought I was beginning to figure out what was going on the author threw a curveball that completely derailed everything. There's a twist toward the end that really changes how you view the entire book.
It's been a few months since I read this but I'm thinking I'll do a re-read next week when I have the physical copy in my hands.

Honestly, if I could give this more than 5 stars I would. It's that good.

What a fast read and interesting story. Although some plot twists were foreseeable, others were great surprises. I liked how background events were revealed in pieces. Kept me wanting to read more. Great book! ( )

I was intrigued by the premise of this story. Victoria Aldridge is being treated in a mental institution where she is trying to regain her memory. She is there with her young daughter and for some reason she gets visits from her husband Wes, whom everyone else believes is dead. But she doesn’t. As she slowly gains her memory, is it real or is it not. The beginning of this story had me and as it progress it became intense. Then the middle seemed to slow down and drifted and couldn’t get into it. The end, although not predictable, didn’t fulfill my expectations and make up for the majority of the book. ( )

Wow. This psychological thriller grabbed me from the first page and never let go.

Victoria Donovan is a patient at Fairfax Mental Health Institute. She can't remember how she got there. She's there with her baby Evelyn, and her husband Wes visits her every night, even though everyone else says her husband is dead. What is going on, and why would people say Wes is dead? As Victoria struggles to piece together her memories, she slowly realizes that maybe she doesn't really want to remember, and the more she remembers, the less she is able to trust those around her.

With every memory that Victoria managed to recall, I felt a growing sense of dread. I absolutely wanted to know about Victoria's past, but at the same time I was afraid to know. I was just like Victoria. I was mesmerized; I couldn't put the book down. I could feel every bit of Victoria's confusion, frustration, and fear. In fact, in one scene that closed out a chapter, I was so startled at what took place that I literally jumped and almost screamed. As if I had just watched it on a movie screen. Nicely done, Ms. Read! ( )

From my blog

Psychological Suspense

Wow, wow and wow. This is a book I wished I was able to read in 1 seating, staying up until almost 2am for two nights is not me but I couldn't get enough. The storytelling has you on the edge of your seat.

Victoria has been in a verbal and physical abusive marriage and something so bad has happened she is now in a mental institution. The story is mainly told from her point of view, I never felt that she was crazy but couldn't wait to find out what really put her there. She couldn't remember and her Doctor was slowly showing her pictures to assist with bringing back the memories.

Farifax Mental Health Institute was where most of the story took place. You knew something was off but there is no way to figure it out. Her husband Wes was scary, the total beautiful handsome perfect to the outside world husband but those mind games that became physical, shocking. There are other storylines that I am unable to go into but it is executed perfectly, you will not want to put this book down.

It finally gets to 90% almost and then you are saying WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. I totally thought I missed something, saved the page because I thought I would have to go back and then the mastermind craziness is revealed. Sometimes I think authors wrap it all up with no flaws but it really came at the perfect time and was a great ending. Sometimes Plan A don't work out so you go with Plan B, it was a whoa thrilling moment but made so much sense, not one that could have been thought of.

You did pick up that something was wrong and depressive about Victoria and it was fine. The ultimate ending makes your heart melt, finally the beginning of healing.

Note - now I understand why it says adult audience and used words like steamy. It is not erotica but the sex scenes are detailed, there was I believe two, if you are not into that you can easily skip over. Calia Read books are amazing, so glad I found this author. You can read them out of order. It says Book 2 but the only consistent is Fairfax, looks like we will get stories about a mental institution that gives us a psychological suspense.

This is really close to a 5 star read but a major character should have been in the ending scenes, I am confused why she isn't. Also a major part of what can be considered Victoria being crazy, I can't believe would happen. It won't be allowed and other patients would totally mention it, I wish they would have did this a little different. ( )
