Fantasy. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:The sizzling, un-put-downable sequel to the New York Times bestselling Rebel of the Sands, by Goodreads Choice Awards Best Debut Author of 2016 Alwyn Hamilton!

Mere months ago, gunslinger Amani al'Hiza fled her dead-end hometown on the back of a mythical horse with the mysterious foreigner Jin, seeking only her own freedom. Now she's fighting to liberate the entire desert nation of Miraji from a bloodthirsty sultan who slew his own father to capture the throne.

When Amani finds herself thrust into the epicenter of the regimeâ??the Sultan's palaceâ??she's determined to bring the tyrant down. Desperate to uncover the Sultan's secrets by spying on his court, she tries to forget that Jin disappeared just as she was getting closest to him, and that she's a prisoner of the enemy. But the longer she remains, the more she questions whether the Sultan is really the villain she's been told he is, and whoâ??s the real traitor to her sun-bleached, magic-filled homeland.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Miraji, about the rebellion, about djinni and Jin and the Blue-Eyed Bandit. In Traitor to the Throne, the only certainty is that everything will change.

A great sequel to the first in the trilogy - think I liked it more than the first, in fact. A smart and interesting continuation of the series. Recommended to those interested in an enticing fantasy world. ( )

Traitor to the Throne is the second volume in a YA Fantasy trilogy that is about revenge, love, sacrifice and loyalty. Set in a world that is part Arabian Nights and part American Western, in this volume we read about palace intrigue and military strategy as the rebellion against the Sultan of Miraji falters. The main character, Amani is not doing well as her friends are on the run, she has been separated from Jin, the love of her life, and she has been captured and sold to the Sultan, who covets her Djinni powers. She must deal with jealousy in the harem, and the loss of her powers as iron pellets have been inserted in her body.

There is a lot going on in this volume as new characters are introduced and old ones come and go. And, of course, just as the story builds to an exciting climax, the book ends leaving the reader eager to jump into the third volume. With it’s diverse cast of characters, the brutal aspects of war and rebellion highlighted, and a few very interesting twists, this was an excellent addition to the story.

So far the first two book in this fantasy trilogy have been entertaining and enjoyable. I am looking forward to the third book and the many reveals and twists that it will most certainly supply. ( )

Probably 3.5 stars, like Rebel of the Sands. Perhaps I was spoiled by the action-packed start to the first book, I thought this one was very slow to get started; however, the palace politics were well done, with significant intrigue. Amani was more subdued in this middle novel, still yearning for freedom from tyranny, but Hamilton seems to move away from the dire poverty theme of the first book. We really saw precious little of Jin, but got to know more about the Sultan, his chosen successor and others in the royal family as Amani was trapped in the Sultan's harem by choice for much of the novel. I also liked the brewing unrest over the Sultan's dealings with foreign countries to seize and maintain power. Lots of sacrifices made along the way to further the rebellion. ( )

Every third paragraph: "...and it was all my fault!" The overall story is great, but it's annoying to trudge through it. Also, the author portrays love as extreme possessiveness, which is disappointing for YA. ( )

Just as amazing as the first time around - and so much cooler after hearing the author talk about it! I cannot WAIT to start Hero at the Fall right now. ( )
