Olivia has been raised to live according to the expectations of society. She has married “well”, produced an heir and has done all that was expected of her. Widows in 19th century England were allowed more freedom than most and she was ready to indulge herself – since she was now a widow. Her dream is to be a wee bit wicked and has even wished for such an opportunity when into her life returns Jack…the young man that once held her young heart in his hands…until…he didn’t.
A few nights together in Idyllwild opens new worlds to Olivia and when she heads to London with her young children she hopes to enjoy her freedom by dallying with Jack, volunteering time where she chooses, giving up mourning gowns, driving a curricle and…whatever else her heart desires. And she does just that until she is caught in a compromising position and her life changes in an instant. Whether or not she and Jack can find a happily ever after that does not see her losing her vivacity is the question and it is a big one.
What I like about this series is that the women are strong and make attempts to claim what they want and need in life. The men are desirable, attractive, and capable in and out of the bedroom and they are good partners for the women. I look forward to reading book three to find out who Henry, Olivia’s brother, will end up with and also wonder if cousin Alice has a story of her own, too.
Thank you to the author’s publicist for offering me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. ( )
