Lady Amanda is tired of having both her intelligence and her work dismissed. After blackmailing her way into medical school, she catches the eye of her anatomy professor from the moment she walks into his lecture hall. Is he interested in her? Or only her invention-a clockwork spider that can spin artificial nerves? Lord Thornton, a prominent neurobiologist, has been betrayed. Secret government technology has been stolen from his laboratory, and a foreign spy is attempting to perfect it via a grisly procedure . . . using gypsies as test subjects. The last thing he needs is the distraction of a beautiful-and brilliant-new student, even if her spider could heal a deteriorating personal injury. Until her device is stolen and used in the latest murder. Lord Thornton has no option but to bring her into his laboratory as well as the investigation where they must fight their growing, yet forbidden, attraction. Bodies accumulate and fragile bonds are tested as they race across London, trying to catch the spy before it's too late.… (mehr)

This was great. I think I thought it was going to be more romance focused but the romance is pretty slow burn and the relationship doesn't really happen until the last quarter. Instead there's a whole plot with spies and theft and murders and it was brilliant. I loved Amanda. She was intelligent and fiesty and fashionable. The relationship between her and Thornton is a real partnership - they both are intelligent in their own rights and support one another to achieve their goals. It was nice to see. The mystery was kind of confusing. I don't know if I'm just particularly slow today or if it was a bit of a mess - but I felt a bit lost at some points of who the evil mastermind was. Either way the reveal was both expected and unexpected if that makes any sense. I liked all the science and enjoyed the steampunk setting. I would've liked to see more development of the secondary characters - especially when the length of the novel is taken into account - but overall I really enjoyed this and will definitely be reading the next one. 1884, and Lady Amanda Ravensdale is enrolled at medical school and working on a clockwork spider that can spin artificial nerves which she hopes can repair the damage down to her brother's legs. Sebastian Talbot, Fifth Earl of Thornton and lecturer and researcher in neurobiology is impressed with her work.
Mix the steampunk elements with romance, secret agents, foreign spies, betrayal and it makes for an enjoyable read.

I tripped over this audiobook while I was trying to find something to listen to on a long car trip. While I love Hoopla, they do not always have what I want to listen to when I want to listen to it, so I hunt for new things. This time I hit the jackpot. I quite enjoyed this steampunk tale of medical espionage. The steampunk was not outlandish, made sense, and worked well in the storyline. Lady Amanda wants to go to medical school. She is one of the very few women, and most think she is just there to catch a husband. Then you have Dr. Thorton who is way more than just a doctor, and a professor, he is a member of the Queen’s secret service. He is a bit of an eccentric genius who has created extra sensory clockwork ears, is working on a super eye, etc. His biggest problem is his leg. When he hears of Lady Amanda’s clockwork spider designed to help fix never connections he is not only intrigued, he is flabbergasted that it was invented by a woman. Lady Amanda’s intellect and personality is going to rub off on Thorton, and maybe between the two of them, they can catch the criminals performing deadly experiments on the gyspy population.

I was not expecting much from this book or from the audiobook. But I found myself sucked into the adventure and the romance of the story. This is just the first book in a trilogy and I will be checking out the rest of the series as soon as my Hoopla account renews.

This is the first book in the Elemental Web Chronicles (which is a trilogy). I really really loved this book a ton. I felt like it was made for me. I loved the scientist/doctor female lead, I loved the Victorian setting, I loved the steampunk elements and mystery and the romance as well!

Lady Amanda blackmailed her father to allow her to go to medical school. Now she must find a husband by the end of year if she wants to stay in medical school. She has also created a fantastic invention/spider that allows her to spin artificial nerves, thereby curing paralysis and other nerve disorders. Things get complicated when her spider gets involved in a plot against the crown and Amanda is invited to work in Lord Thornton’s lab. Lord Thornton comes with a whole slew of baggage but him and Amanda are inexplicably drawn to each other in a more-than-professional way.

I enjoyed this whole story thoroughly from the beginning to the end. I would recommend to those who enjoy steampunk reads with a nice romance. There was also a very good mystery here and some fun technical discussion around various inventions and steampunk items.

The characters are very well done and the romantic scenes between them are amazing! I also really loved all the intriguing steampunk elements and the serial killer mystery linked to them. The world feels very complete and well thought out.

Overall I really loved this and definitely plan on continuing the series! This book had a very good balance of steampunk elements, action, science, romance, adventure, and mystery. Recommended if you like steampunk romance with a heavy science theme to it. ( )

faily likable characters - too much focus on romance (lust) - ok world building - ok dramatic development - improperly founded dramatic twists (to do it right we need subtle clues as to the betrayal that we don't recognize at the time but later can look back and recognize). ( )
