Wicked Fun

When I saw the cover of this book I had to read it! I love Halloween, (and Christmas). When the temperature goes down to the fifties, my mind screams fall. I start searching for Halloween books to read.
I was excited to get this book and really hoping it would be worthy of kicking off Halloween for me. Yes, I am aware it is September, what is your point? I have fairy lights up, hot chocolate and comfy jammies. I just needed the book. This book was what I was hoping for. With a crazy mix of some lovable characters that include witches, leprechauns, gnomes, trolls and more, I was enchanted from the start. The book has a collection of three mysteries. They moved along at a fast pace and weren't especially difficult. I wasn't put off by that at all due to the rollicking fun I was finding in them. At the end of the book I was satisfied but also sad. I wanted more of Wanda and her crazy adventures. I wanted her to visit Corky. I want her to meet someone better than Tom. I want Sam to get together with Amber. I want to hear about Aunt Hazel's date. I want to know how Alice and Jinxy made up. I want to read about their reactions to the last mystery. I could go on with what I want to know. There is more. The fact that I want to know so much more should clue you in with how much I enjoyed myself. I really am looking forward to the next adventure in Pumpkintown.
For those who wish to know: there is some mild language used. There are references to sex, (and cheating), but no explicit actions. The violence level I would have as fair. There is a lot going on and much of it involves murder and attempts to murder. Nothing was gory though. The writing, to me, would be placed as mature young adult for the references about sex. The mystery is not difficult.
I would like to thank BookTasters on Twitter for hooking me up with the book. I would like to thank the author for the review copy of her book. I agreed to give an honest review and that is what I have done. The opinions stated are based upon my feelings and thoughts while reading the book.
If you are looking for a fun way to pass a couple of hours give this book a try. ( )

Wanda Tempest runs a magic shop, Wanda's Wonders, in Pumpkintown. She's also a witch, as are her sisters, Alice and Amber. As successful as her magic shop is, she's got another pursuit: she's apprenticing as a detective with Inspector Sam Shamrock of the Pumpkintown Police.

Sam is a leprechaun. Many of the residents, or residents of nearby villages, are gnomes, trolls, and other magical or mythical creatures. In Jagged Wood, there are talking trees.

And the first case we see Wanda tackling is the death of is the death of Mr. Maple, a kindly old tree who provided the Sparkling Sap so essential for many of her recipes. What starts as a seemingly straightforward investigation quickly grows strange and complicated, and briefly results in Wanda herself being a possible suspect in the murder of her business rival, Hugo the half-gnome.

Sam seems a bit of a clown at first; gradually we see that the leprechaun cop is a leprechaun of brains, character, and toughness.

Wanda grows as a character, too. Pumpkinton is a little bit wacky, a lot complicated, and animated by a lively culture of gossip.

Worth a read. Recommended.

I received a free electronic copy of this book from the author. ( )

Pumpkin Town Perils by Aubrey Law is a collection of four light and humorous paranormal mystery stories from the Wild, Wild, Witch series. This ebook is currently free on Amazon.

We follow Wanda Tempest, a witch who not only owns and runs a magical supply shop, but also works as a part time investigator. Working alongside the police inspector, Sam Shamrock (a drunken, over weight leprechaun), and her beloved black Siberian cat, Jinxy (her sassy talking companion), she helps solve the mysteries of the Jagged Wood enchanted Forest.

Just about everyone who lives within the enchanted forest is either some sort of magical or mythical creature. It's hard to imagine all these creatures living together in a modernized world with out any crimes being committed. This world is full of talking trees, gnomes, trolls, witches and so much more! I enjoyed the range of character species in this book, but I didn't really like any of their personalities. I hard a hard time connecting with the MC, Wanda; I found her to be full of herself and super shallow.

The crimes range from petty to serious, and sprinkled on top is Wanda's personal drama to make things more exciting. The mysteries were intriguing enough, but they didn't keep my interest. I didn't really feel a strong connection between the characters and crimes, or the characters themselves.

Aubrey Law's writing confused me, and was contradictive at times. For example: the first mystery was of the murder of Mr. Maple (a talking tree), and at one point Wanda feels she's found her number one suspect, Hugo, a half gnome and magical shop competitor. She then (only a couple of short paragraphs later) changes her mind and flat out accuses Hugo for the murder, despite the lack of any additional evidence against him, and then goes back to being uncertain again - all within the SAME short chapter. There are other instances in this this book that frustrated and confused me too.

For all the issues I had with the writing, I feel this series has potential. I found myself thinking "this could be a great series for children and middle grade readers.". Only if, of course, some parts were edited out to make it more age appropriate. However, this could be more suited to adults after some revisions and if the story and characters were made more complex. This series fell some where in between for me. I honestly couldn't tell who the authors target audience was at times.

Overall this is a light, paranormal crime mystery series, with some humor and lots of magic. While this book didn't really do it for me, you might still enjoy it. This could be a fun series to read around Halloween time.

**** I received an eBook copy of this title in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to book tasters for introducing me to this author and thank you to Aubrey Law for giving me the chance to read and review her book. **** ( )
