After seven years in Canada, Korean native Jae-ho Kim still hasn't had the special Christmas Eve date night that he would have enjoyed back home--a fact that has his sister, Soon-kyu, very upset during their yearly phone conversation. This year, Jae's lack of effort concerning his love life comes back to haunt him in the form of Christmas Eve ghosts, showing him very vividly what will become of him if he refuses to take a chance and find a date for Christmas Eve. A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Advent Calendar package "Celebrate!".… (mehr)

What a great story! Fun, Christmas-y in a very different way, and a lovely modern take on the ghosts of Christmas. The author had me feeling for Jae, the Korean main character (and narrator) from the fist page, and my need for wanting him to wake up and do something about his sad personal situation only grew from there. His capacity for love is truly great, if he could just speak up.

Jae is from Korea, now lives in Canada, and is so painfully shy and withdrawn it hurts. He is a great artist, and has a crush on his boss, but he is never going to do anything about the attraction he feels. As the reason for his attitude emerged as the story progressed, I could see where it came from, but the conclusions he drew and how much he let it affect his whole life was super sad. And without his ghostly visitors, who were very well designed, he would still sit there and wonder why he was alone.

If you like stories about shy men who need a bit of a push to get themselves in gear and go after the man they admire, if you're interested in some foreign Christmas traditions as a setting, and if you're looking for a sweet read about a man who truly deserves a happy ending, then you will probably enjoy this short story.
