Phillip Matyszak manages to combine a good narrative of the life of 17 important figures with a wider analysis of the historical context of the period they lived, and the effect they had on the direction of ancient Rome. Whilst clearly not a definitive account of the lives of each of Rome’s enemies it is a great starting point for students or those that are looking to get a good grounding before delving deeper. ( )

The premise of this book is fascinating - an in-depth look at some of republican and imperial Rome's most determined enemies. It is only after reading a few chapters that the style creeps up on the reader; this book feels as if it's written for a high school student, not a person interested in history. Factually correct, but too light in style and lacking in depth. ( )
