Final Departure is an entertaining yet thoughtful message: Take eternity seriously or you'll have a really long time to regret it. Spurred by his interest in near-death experiences, Jeff Walton pieces together the research from a number of different disciplines into a sobering novel about life, death, heaven, and hell. Set in the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the story begins with retired NCIS Special Agent Dan Lucas, who gets stranded overnight by an ice storm and then ensnarled in a contentious debate about God and the meaning of life, with fellow traveler Ben Chernick, an atheist college professor.Walton, a 29-year NCIS veteran, injects the analytic mindset and steely determination of a counterintelligence professional into the Dan Lucas character. Through Lucas, we glimpse into the hidden world of NCIS counterintelligence and combating terrorism.Final Departure focuses the reader's attention on who gets into heaven and who misses the cut. It also poses some hard questions about how life originated on earth as well as what impact, if any, evil really has on mankind. The story has layers of action and themes that touch on some of life's most profound questions: How did we get here? Does it matter how we treat others? Tightly woven with a backdrop of human tragedies and crime, the story pulls the reader along as the characters bare their souls and allow the reader access to their thoughts.Final Departure is a statement and a challenge. Walton believes his book will take you on a journey with no return flight. He might even get you to the destination he has in mind.… (mehr)

We were sent a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of writing a review. We are a strong military family. Every male in our family who was physically able to serve in the military has done so.

The author, Jeff Walton, is a former Navy man. Our oldest son is a chief petty officer in the navy. Our youngest son is a corporal in the United States Marine Corp (oorah). As you may know, the Marine Corps is a department of the Navy. The Men’s Department!!

Final Departure is a great book. We rate books on a scale of zero to five stars. Zero is absolutely terrible and five stars means the book is wonderful. Five might mean the book is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

If we could, we would give this wonderful book 490 stars. Since the most we can give it is five stars, that is what it gets.

The pace of this book is a little slow, but there is reason that the book is a little slow. Jeff Walton uses the slow pace to present the case for believing in the Bible.

Throughout this book, scientific facts are presented that back up the validity of the Bible. We are both Bible-believing Christians and we were not aware of many of these facts.

The Bible tells us in Matthew 5:17 NIV

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."

This is an important verse to remember when reading Final Departure. It will help to make much of what you read understandable.

We find this book to be very sound doctrinally. If you are a Christian and you struggle with how to explain Christianity to non-Christians, this book might very well give you the information you need to help you explain your beliefs.

If you are a non-Christian but you want to understand why your Christian friends hold on to the Bible and their faith, Final Departure might give you the information you seek.

We enjoyed Final Departure immensely. It is suspenseful and entertaining. We hope you enjoy it. ( )
