Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti's Harley Quinn, vol. 6: Black, White and Red All Over concludes the New 52 run of Harley Quinn comics. The story features a further run in with the Mayor of New York, more trouble with mobsters, and other riffs on elements of popular culture. The new vigilante Red Tool is a clear play on Deadpool, thereby playing on the various works of fan art that portray Harley and Deadpool together as the ultimate anarchic anti-heroes. There's also some nice spoofs of the Transformers franchise. The final story, about a fight to protect a tree in Brooklyn, pokes fun at DC's second major reboot, Rebirth, which did not impact all series equally. Discussing their friendship, Poison Ivy comments, "Things may change around us, but that will always stay the same." This promises that, no matter what happens in the new Rebirth stories, Conner and company will continue to put the characters first while having fun. The art by John Timms, Chad Hardin, Elsa Charretier, and Moritat features more of the crisp lines and mad scrabble action that fans have come to love from this series. This is a must-read for fans of the character. My only major complaint is the lack of an Oxford comma in the volume title, but that's unimportant. "This is it! The conclusion of Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner's smash-hit, best-selling series is here! Until the next series, that is! In the aftermath of her encounter with The Joker, Harley's head is spinning, and she wants nothing more than to get back to her normal life...but she should know by now there's no such thing! Harley's known for her even temperament and economy of language--oh, we can't even finish that sentence. Let's face it: she's crazy, and she talks too much. So what happens when she discovers a nemesis even more insane and more hyper-loquacious? It's Harley vs. the unbelievable Redtool!"-- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

In this volume, we see Harley go for a "makeover" and re-do her hair to match the Suicide Squad film look, which I'm not necessarily thrilled about but whatever. The Red Tool storyline is arguably problematic (it seems like she's possibly jumping from one dysfunctional, abusive relationship to another, although perhaps our Harley is holding her own a little better now), but there are so many good quips and banter in it. The Transformers parody plotline is just plain ridiculous. However, the final story with Harley and Poison Ivy is quite lovely and is a nice finish to this run before the Rebirth line begins. ( )
