Phoebe and Marigold team up with Dakota and her goblins to discover the cause behind the unusual winter weather, the power outage, and the draining of ambient magic. With Max tagging along, they confront a dragon who is comfort-eating at the power station.

This was charming and adorable, as expected. I really liked that unlike previous volumes, this book had one storyline it followed from beginning to end. As much as I love the comic strip nature of previous volumes, I found I preferred having a bigger plot. It also allowed for some more character development for all involved, especially Max.

The plot itself was fantastic. And I loved the resolution! The perfect amount of whimsy for this series.

Just adorable! Today I asked the librarian for some cute wintry or holiday graphic novels and she suggested this one. Phoebe and Marigold are dynamite characters, as is Dakota! I laughed so many times as I read this, and it was a perfect read on a chilly Saturday, offering a cozy sense of friendship and adventure. Adults and kids alike will enjoy this story and Dana Simpson's spot-on portrait of contemporary life, and who wouldn't smile at a bilingual unicorn in leg warmers?! A big thank you to the author for representing diverse families in her book too. :)

I continue to really enjoy this middle grade comics series. Volume 6 (Magic Storm) was a proper graphic novel, with a continuous plot throughout, and I didn't enjoy that one as much. But on the whole I enthusiastically recommend these, and definitely not just to middle-grade-aged readers. (
