Return to the sprawling universe of the Galactic Commons, as humans, artificial intelligence, aliens, and some beings yet undiscovered explore what it means to be a community in this exciting third adventure in the acclaimed and multi-award-nominated science fiction Wayfarers series, brimming with heartwarming characters and dazzling space adventure. Hundreds of years ago, the last humans on Earth boarded the Exodus Fleet in search of a new home among the stars. After centuries spent wandering empty space, their descendants were eventually accepted by the well-established species that govern the Milky Way. But that was long ago. Today, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, the birthplace of many, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. While the Exodans take great pride in their original community and traditions, their culture has been influenced by others beyond their bulkheads. As many Exodans leave for alien cities or terrestrial colonies, those who remain are left to ponder their own lives and futures: What is the purpose of a ship that has reached its destination? Why remain in space when there are habitable worlds available to live? What is the price of sustaining their carefully balanced way of life?and is it worth saving at all? A young apprentice, a lifelong spacer with young children, a planet-raised traveler, an alien academic, a caretaker for the dead, and an Archivist whose mission is to ensure no one's story is forgotten, wrestle with these profound universal questions. The answers may seem small on the galactic scale, but to these individuals, it could mean everything.… (mehr)

Good, but not as good as the first one ( )

This was my favorite of the trilogy. It lacked plot like [b:The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet|22733729|The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)|Becky Chambers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1405532474s/22733729.jpg|42270825], but the stories intertwined really well and I found the characters more interesting than in [b:A Closed and Common Orbit|29475447|A Closed and Common Orbit (Wayfarers, #2)|Becky Chambers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1457598923s/29475447.jpg|48620653]. I think the Exodus fleet provided an excellent stand in for what our society could be if we could actually decide to get along and put the public interest ahead of selfishness and greed.

One of the things I really appreciated was the civil religion around Naming Days and burial rituals. Civil religion in our society has been systematically dismantled over the last couple of generations and has yet to be replaced with anything equally compelling that binds us together as a people. It's challenging in a society as large and diverse as we are of course, but finding something we can all come together over should be possible.

One scene that I found particularly compelling was Sawyer's funeral. Full disclosure, I did read that chapter about twelve hours after my grandfather passed away so I may be a little more emotional than usual, but I thought the liturgy was a beautiful reminder of where the Exodus came from and why they take care of their dead the way that do. I'm really enjoying these books describing life in the future under various living conditions (life on a starship, life on an alien planet, and now, life on a generational ship). The characters are all interesting and seem like real people with real issues. However, this book was a little too sedate for me compared to the first 2. I enjoyed it; just didn't feel it was as compelling and MUST READ! as the others. Looking forward to more in this series. ( )

This is another book by Becky Chambers I don't know how to rate. I like the slice of life in space elements. But to me this is a sad story. Someone dies, and yes that became a catalyst for change, but he died alone. His story just began and then just ended. I don't like sad stories.

But the way the culture of the Exodus Fleet is explained, is marvelous. It's one of those overly specific things I enjoy reading about.

And I think one of the things Chambers does very well, is making characters that feel utterly real. I don't always agree with their motivations for things but I'm invested and get the reasons why.

I do see myself rereading this but because it's such a 'quiet' story it doesn't feel like a 4 or 5 star book. More like a 3 star but I most of the time I don't want to reread those.

You believe in our way of life here? Cool. Implement those ways planetside. Make sure people don't forget. Make sure people remember that a closed system is a closed system even when you can't see the edges.
"I can only tell you what I *want* you to do, and that's based on my shallow impression of who you are and how I'd like your story to go. You can't operate by that. You're the only one who can think about what you *should* do. ... I'll only tell you if you understand that when a person tells you what they want of you, they're not deciding for you. It's their opinion, not your truth. Got it?"
