Scholzenj | Jul 26, 2020 |  Characterization: Poor Recommended: No Level: Middle school Touchdown Kid follows 12-year-old Cory as he is recruited for an elite private school that is known for creating football stars. Cory comes from a rough part of town and, consequently, has a tarnished reputation at his new school. He is a "scholarship kid" which means he lives in with a well-to-do family while attending school. I found that there were a lot of inconsistencies in the interplay between Cory and the adults in his life, as well as disturbing gendered ideals that seem to come out of nowhere. For example, in his first week at his host family's home, he is resistant to calling home because he needs to "be a man." What is lacking here is any reason for him to hold such ideals; there is not a father figure instigating such attitudes and earlier in the story Cory showed emotion without hesitation. This sudden compulsion to "be a man" feels forced and seems to be a projection from the author that is inconsistent with Cory's character. The ending of this book was very confusing. Cory's host family believes that Cory was involved with a burglary of the host's home. Cory comes to learn that they are putting up a front toward him, making him believe that he is trusted while not trusting him at all. Despite this, Cory continues to play along and act like nothing is wrong. I would have really liked to see Cory stand up for himself and do something to refute his host family. Cory's mother goes out of her way to accuse his friend Liam of being part of the burglary, which lands Liam in the hands of the police. At the last second, Cory runs in and defends his friend and all of a sudden Cory's mom is defensive against the police and now believes that Liam is innocent.
