The individual books are too short and they don't feel like separate installments, they are simply chapters organized by adventure/location. This series, with its stories about “the captain” and “his men” – making up a quintet of very different lovers – just keeps getting better. The third installment was enjoyable because there is a renewed sense of adventure as the crew explores the planet, but also because there is a lot of new information about the captain’s personal life.

While the captain previously kept his lovers in the dark, he is now beginning to open up. Partially this is because the group has “admitted” they will not make it back to Earth and have found a potential new home planet. The rules necessarily change if maintaining discipline in the confines of a spaceship is no longer a concern. But partially his becoming more like a member of the crew and less like a distant authority figure is because he himself has changed. Having four lovers will do that to a man…

The main events of this installment center around the ship’s crash landing (the engines have finally given up the ghost), the exploration of an alien city with the mysterious Rux as their guide, and the crew’s adventures inside an ancient alien research facility as they look for spare parts. I certainly did not expect what happens once they were inside, nor Rux’s revelations! It made for an exciting, suspenseful read and while some questions were answered, I hope to find out even more in the next book.

If you like stories about men who encounter the unexpected when exploring a potential new home planet, if you’re a fan of polyamorous relationships and want to find out more about the quietest member of the captain’s quintet, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful read with lots of revelations and some very hot sex of the unexpected kind, then you will probably like this novella.
