When love takes you down, it's best to just try to control the fall. Camilla Delgado I'd rather be elbows deep defusing a car bomb than all up in anyone's feels, but civilian life is messy-and all I've got since one slip almost sent me home in a body bag. Now I debug lines of code by day and spend my nights with WestWind, a retired SEAL. It's not what you think. We're online gaming buddies, geeking out and trash talking to our heart's content. But now he wants to meet up. I'm weak enough to say yes, though there's something he has to understand. I handle my own stuff. I guard my heart. And I trust no one. West Sampson FlashPoint's irreverent mouth and uncanny gaming ability have been a welcome distraction from the cold-sweat nightmares that still plague me eight years after leaving the teams. And the fact that the latest fitness fads are killing my Krav Maga studio, forcing me to take on risky rescue missions to make ends meet. One date with Cam and I'm on fire for more, but she's retreating back behind her keyboard-and her secrets. I'm willing to lay it all on the line to show her broken can be beautiful. But she has to be willing to reveal her raw edges-and trust that my own are a perfect fit.… (mehr)

This was good. I enjoyed this. 2.5 stars. Cam was a great character with a complex backstory and kind disposition. The backstories of all the characters though were emotionally intense. I did find myself a bit confused with what was happening. The author showed rather than told but I think there should've been a bit more explanation about what was going on. I didn't quite understand the situation with Royce or with Lucas. Still, this was a great story and I felt emotionally invested in the characters and their search for happiness. I mostly liked the relationship between West and Cam, although their lack of communication at times irritated me. I did like that they tried to open up to each other. But I kind of felt that there was too much happening in this book. There was the emotional aspect, the tech plot line, the backstories - it was just too much. I think there either needs to be more development or less plot complications. Still it was a nice little read. ( )

I've read book three in this series, and it compelled me to pick it up from the beginning. Just as in the third book, I found myself drawn to the main characters who are both a little broken from their past experiences and come together beautifully when they finally bare themselves to each other - faults, flaws and all.

Cam is smart, strong and determined, but her past mistakes and time spent serving left her lonely and wounded, both of which haunt her. West, as her counterpart, so badly wants to fix what he sees broken - in her, in himself, and in other wounded people - but needs Cam's trust to finally get himself there.

It's a thrilling story with plenty of action, sexiness and a satisfying ending. ( )

A good read, though an excess of graphic sex

This is the second book I have read in this series which focuses on former military personal whose lives have been traumatically changed by their service.

In this book both protagonists, Cam and West, have been ‘damaged’ while serving, she physically, he mentally. They are both under severe pressure in their civilian jobs and find relaxation in online gaming. When the story begins they have become online friends, but not yet met face to face, a prospect which Cam dreads because of past rejections.

The story is written in the first person, alternating between Cam and West. This is done well, though it is not my preference, and I did find myself occasionally forgetting who was the “I” that was speaking. The characters are well fleshed out and multidimensional. The plot, too, is multidimensional and engaging.

There is, for my taste, an excess of graphic sex. It seems to be there to pander to the basest instincts rather than adding anything to the plot or characters - in fact at one point (with a lengthy description of FaceTime sex) I thought the author was setting Cam up for quite a difference sort of cyber threat which would end up with her in physical danger.

If you want to compare this with a writer who can describe passionate love scenes without crudeness, try Irish Winters. ( )

DESCRIPTION, NOT REVIEW: She’s a wounded warrior. He’s a former SEAL and a hell of an online gamer. Can their love survive the transition to the real world?
After almost dying in an Afghanistan war zone, Cam found it easier to live in the virtual world than face reality. Until her flirtatious gaming buddy wants to meet face-to-face.
Even though West turns out to be a hunky former SEAL who doesn’t seem to mind her cane, her instincts still scream “RUN.”
As she resolves to give love a shot, the biggest project of her career comes under attack by a hacker. Does she have enough ammunition to fight on both battlefields?
West is haunted by the mission that took the lives of his team. So when he befriends a gamer and former Army ordnance specialist with scars of her own, their connection soothes something in his battered soul.
After the sharp-shooting beauty surpasses his wildest dreams, he’s determined to break down the armored panels she’s built around her heart. When his own worst fears return, he worries he won’t be able to face the coming challenges alone.
With new enemies and old phantoms from their past closing in, can Cam and West find the courage to lower their defenses and heal their wounded hearts with love?
Breaking His Code is the first book in Away From the Keyboard series of explosive military romantic suspense novels. If you like diehard female veterans, sexy cyber romance, and emotional journeys of healing, then you’ll love this heartfelt tale of love after war. ( )
