Brainwashing! Computer hacking! International intrigue! Psychedelic drugs! Female secret societies! Fringe science! Chinese beer! Walking corpses! The Goddess of Confusion! All the staples of fun and conspiracy meet, shake hands, and get into fistfights in Axis Mundi Sum, a novel where conspirators of all stripes try to further their own ends and make sense of existence. Would-be journalists, freelance criminals, monomaniacal monarchists, dead Taoist sages, sci-fi speedfreaks, computer code fascists, Discordian potentates, lazy college students, Egyptian gods, and more engage in gunplay, mind control, phone phreaking, sexual coercion, disinformation, and other dirty tricks in order to gain the upper hand over anyone they can? with mixed, but always hilarious, results. In a world where someone is pulling everyone's strings, and it seems there is no escape from the hidden hand of shadowy powers, the only thing that might set you free is good old-fashioned absurdity, and Axis Mundi Sum is the place to find it.… (mehr)

Axis Mundi Sum has a great concept for a book. It is fairly difficult to read though as I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters. The chapters read like a bunch of short stories that interweave which is good. The switch from one chapter to the next is at appropriate places in the story. It was an interesting read just not my favorite book. ( )

Given the references to R.A Wilson, my expectations for this book were high. Too high? All the elements are there, from brainwashing and conspiracy to Tao and psychedelics, even Eris makes an apparition. Yet somehow it took me a while to finish the book, it felt like i never really got hooked. Still, an interesting discordian read, absurd enough to be funny. Thank you for this LBT member giveaway. I was really looking forward to reading this book when the introduction started out like such- "If you plagiarize, steal from, copy, or otherwise fuck with this novel, the author will cut your eyes out and fill the sockets with sawdust." And then I got to page 45 and the formatting went all to hell and I couldn't read it. (mobi) ( )

Axis Mundi Sum by D. A. Smith is a curious addition to the satire-conspiracy genre. It has an interesting mix of freaks, gods, hackers, assassins, and miscellaneous conservatives with easy to follow names. The short readable chapters each have an excellent internal logic and a few humorous moments.
I found the book tedious. There was no character that I could root for; all are despicable, some more so than others. While the plot lines are consistent from beginning there is no sense of where it is leading. Axis Mundi Sum is an entertaining read in small doses. ( )

It was a fun premise for a story with some interesting characters. At times I almost thought I had wandered into a Robert Rankin story. It was a bit too much all at once though with so many story lines going on and jumping back and forth. I almost thought it should have been broken into 2 books. ( )
