Can't Nothing Bring Me Down is the memoir of 101-year-old, world-record-holding runner Ida Keeling. Miss Ida, as she's known throughout her Bronx community, isn't your typical runner. Her fierce independence helped her through the Depression and the Civil Rights movement. But her greatest trials were yet to come.Ida's two sons were brutally murdered. Justice was never found. Ida felt like she didn't have the strength to carry on and she couldn't hope anymore. But encouraged by her daughter, Ida put on her first pair of running shoes at the age of sixty-seven and began to chase the paralyzing sorrow from her heart.Running gave light and new energy to Ida, and since her first race nearly thirty-five years ago, she's kept running and never looked back. Holding the world record for the fastest time in the 60-meter dash for the 95-99 age group, Ida isn't slowing down. Now she gives us a clear picture of what it means to overcome obstacles.Ida Keeling shares her inspirational story about growing up as a child of immigrants during the Depression and later raising four children as a single mother. She offers time-tested truths gathered from a lifetime of watching a nation change and from a life-long faith in Jesus. "Every night, I thank him for my many blessings, for his guidance, for his protection," Ida says, "And every night he tells me, 'Miss Ida, you just keep on, because I ain't done with you yet."… (mehr)

Can’t Nothing Bring Me Down

Chapter 7:

1. Do not get what you do not need- Mr. Potter Do not buy what you do not need. At all. Be happy with your free hobbies and stay humble and private. And off the Internet.
2. Do not go after what you cannot afford- Mr. Potter Do not go after what you cannot afford like other people do. Instead save up for it and move on to your next thing on your list. On,y buy what you can afford. Buy what you can afford. Not what you see. Use what you see as an inspiration to have a financial life that others may not afford because they are in different situations. Never pass over opportunities to read books or learn simple math calculation skills before buying anything. Convert it to your chosen savings currency. If you cannot afford that put it down and walk away until you can. Always pay off your credit cards. Always!
3. Save any portion of money received no matter how you get it- Mrs. I. Keeling Save any portion of money that you get. It will add up over time. Even if it is $20. Just keep saving. You never know when you will need it.
4. Never throw away the portion you are allowed to spend- Mrs. I. Keeling Give it in charity if you do not need it. Or let it roll over to the next week. But do not spend stupid. Be wise and consistent with your purchases.
5. Spend on what you need. And only that. Anything else you can save up for.
6. Not on what you want. Because you want a stable financial future even more! Not a financially dependent one.
7. One very important lesson that they had to learn was to wait- Mrs. I. Keeling Wait. Do not immediately buy. Ask your four financial people first before buying anything. If they say no. Do not buy. Walk away from the item.
8. No matter what the girls decided to spend their loose change on, I made them wait at least a day and think about the purchase.- Mrs. I. Keeling Wait three weeks to make a purchase. If you really want it and your financial people agree then you can have it.
9. No impulsive spending. That kind of behavior leads to problems when they’re grown up-- Mrs. I. Keeling But no impulsive spending. Shop with a very, very detailed grocery list broken down by type.

Chapter 8:

1. Never ever lie again. Always tell the truth no matter what. Take responsibility for your actions. Even if it means acknowledging that your family is shit and are liars. It does not mean you have to be.
2. Rebuild trust with your parents. One conversation at a time. One day at a time. Be brutally honest with them about everything. Even if they do not want to hear it. It will free you from holding it on your chest. Be candid and direct with them. Yet also respectful and calm in speaking? Without getting an attitude.
3. Stop believing the lies people tell you. Or that you read. Seek the truth. Write the truth. Read the truth. Be the truth. Live the truth. Never ever lie. Or talk bad about someone. It destroys your character too!
4. They knew right from wrong. - Mrs. I. Keeling Do the right thing.
5. Regrets in the form of shoulda, coulda, woulda don’t do a body no good. - Mrs. I. Keeling Do not live in regret of the past. The past is the past and won’t be your future. Do not do that to yourself. Do not let others push you on what you think should do. Do what you feel is right in your heart. Not what others unrealistic expectations and desires of you are. Live your own private life. Away from people who do not give a damn about you and cannot manage their own lives. Yet they feel they have a right to manage yours. Do not give them that power. Ever. Ask for help if you need it. But no more than that.
6. In fact sitting around thinking like that can either paralyze you to the point where you can’t move at all or just plain drive you crazy.- Mrs. I. Keeling Get active in exercise and walk. Do not get active and live in the past or yesteryears. Move forward.
7. I never saw either of my parents look back in regret and whine about what did or did not turn out right- Mrs. I. Keeling Do not whine. At all. One no one cares. Two, others are happy you are miserable. Cheer someone up! Do not hang around negative or toxic people who do not give you joy, peace, happiness, or love.
8. I worked very hard to follow their habit of looking and moving forward- Mrs. I. Keeling Look and move forward. Do not look back. Move forward.

Chapter 10:

1. Go to church- Mr. Potter And praise God. Defeat the plans of the devil through poetry and praise worship. And dancing!
2. Obey your parents- Mr. Potter Obey your parents in all things. No matter how small. Or big. Obey your parents without question. Do not argue. Do not fight. It is not of God.
3. Work as many jobs as you can as early as you can- Mr. Potter And save aggressively so you do not have to work unless you want to.
4. Don’t talk back- Mr. Potter Do not ever talk back to your parents. Show decorum and respect to your parents. Even if your siblings do not. Set an example for them with your relationship with your mother and father separately and together. Know how much to push and when to back off. But be pushing in encouragement in positivity and joy and happiness. Back off when your mother and father get your point and move on. Eventually they will understand how and why you are positive and that it is not for show. That is just how you are truly as a human being. No sass. Just class. And impeccable manners. Never let a bad word about your parents or family come out of your myth. Protect your family and their privacy.
5. Obey the law and whatever institution you find yourself in- Mr. Potter Study the law in depth. Know what you are arguing about with your first sister before you open your mouth!
6. Never lie- Mr. Potter Because you will lose trust with others. And God will be displeased because it is an abominable sin! One of the seven deadly sins. Stop lying and start truth telling. With everyone. Tell them your true feelings.
7. Slacking was never to be tolerated- Mr. Potter Work hard and do not let anyone take advantage of you. Seek opportunities for growth and expansion both in your professional work and your private work.

Chapter 13:

1. I find a way to do whatever I need to do. I can’t let myself down- Mrs. I. Keeling Find a way to do what you need to do to accomplish whatever you need to accomplish within the next benchmark or timespan. Do not let yourself down. It is okay if you do not have the same lifestyle as your siblings. It is perfectly acceptable if you do not like talking or small talk. Unlearn the personality traits and habits you learned from others and revert back to your true authentic personality and perspective. This will take time. But persevere! It is very much worth the effort and time! You cannot let yourself down! Remember you have to live with yourself. By yourself or whatsoever. But get comfortable living on your own and finding hobbies to enjoy and spend time doing outside of spending all your time with your family. Move oh when you are ready. Not before.

Biggest Takeaway:

“You have a choice in life: Get on with life and make the best of it. Or let others take advantage of you and manipulate you to do what they want and leave you dry. But then turn that mess into a triumph and blessings of success. For yourself and your prosperity! And never lose your ability to listen and work and obey. Your parents and your elders.”

Quote in Summary:

“Through the pain of sorrow there is always a better way. Just wait on God and pray!” ( )
