In my opinion, this book should be read in every classroom. It shows how despite setbacks it is important to keep dreaming and believing. I loved the storyline of this book. It was based on a young boy named Michael Steele Wilkins who was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer. His dying wish was to be a bat boy for the New York Yankees, and after reading this book you see how his dreams came true. I also really like the illustrations in this book. I really liked how the illustrator was mindful of what was going on in Michael's life when it came to illustrating him. For example, when he was going through cancer treatments it showed Michale without hair, and there were a few pages where Michael did have hair because he was not taking chemo at the time. I believe the main idea of this book is to always have courage, to never give up, and to always try your hardest regardless of what you may be going through. ( )

Not that the story of a child with Blastoma getting a chance to be a bat boy for the baseball team to loves isn't heartwarming, but the writing in this one just didn't do it for me. The ghosts of great Yankees of the past coming to visit is in another Ray Negron book and I didn't really enjoy that one either. It felt like a bad mix of story and Yankee promotion, with the Yankee promotion being the main ingredient. It felt extremely artificial. ( )

A luminous book about a young boy fighting cancer, who gets a chance to be a Yankee batboy for a game. The spirits of Lou Gehrig and other Yankees who battled cancer visit Michael and give him courage.

A beautiful book of courage and the love of baseball. Illustrations are warm and evocative. Good for sparking discussions on illness, courage, determination, and concern for others. ( )
