A French woman comes to terms with her breast cancer and mastectomy scar through means surreal and absurd, involving burlesque and the second tribute to Betty Boop that I've read this year (not a trend I was expecting). It took me a while to warm up to this graphic novel -- which is mostly wordless for the first half excepting sound effects and background signage and in the second half throws in some song lyrics -- but the message of empowerment and self-acceptance is strong enough to shine through the pantomime and slapstick. ( ) This is something special. Almost wordless, yet full to the brim with delicate narratives. There are little puzzles that resolve, there are weird and silly scenarios that nonetheless convey deep and heartfelt emotions. I found it often delightful, sometimes confusing, and very, very moving. This is an adult book, that covers breast removal and recovery and burlesque and sex and love and all kinds of other things. It's beautiful, whimsical, powerful. This is a pretty cool book! It was such a unique take on illness, body image, and ability that I really wish we saw more of in all media. I do have some reservations about it if I get a little more nit-picky, but overall, it's pretty dang cool. The near wordless format feels almost like a silent movie, and Julie Rocheleau's artwork is fab. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"She lost her left breast, her job, and her guy. She does not know it yet, but this is the best day of her life. An inspiring and surprisingly comedic tale of loss and acceptance told largely through silent sequential narrative"--Back cover. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
