This graphic novel was visually stunning. The artwork is absolutely amazing, and gorgeous. The story, however, is less of a draw. I found it very confusing, the boy characters annoying, and the end unsatisfying as there was no resolution, nor any indication there would be more.

Highly imaginative and beautifully illustrated - although I wished that the book was rendered in full-colour throughout - the illustrations shift from full colour to b&w linework. Started out with a grand premise but fell flat by the end for me. ( )

The Lost Path really lost me. I enjoyed the illustrations (Flechais is talented with ink and color), but the story confused me. I had to reread it twice. The magical-whimsicalness that I love was there, but the execution was not good to me. I thought we were going to learn more about that cool-looking fox, but then it changed to whoever had the bowler hat had control over the forest. The ending was funny in the sense that as soon as the big showdown is about to happen, we get shooed away.

I liked the prideful main character and his banter with his more cautious friend. I’m not sure if the MC’s little brother had an over-active imagination or was somewhere on the spectrum. Either way, the characters, in general, were not too bad besides being snarky. My overall impression of this is the story would work better as a short animation.

DNF about halfway...

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

I thought this would be a fun book to read with my son, but neither of us were very invested in the characters. The boys picked on each other and didn't get along, but they also seemed oblivious to their surroundings.

I enjoyed the history behind the forest and the monsters lurking there, but in the end it fell flat. I was bored with the story and their journey. The colorful illustrations were breathtaking, but the black and white didn't appeal to me as much. I'm sure there was an artistic reason for it, but I wish the entire thing had been done in those beautiful, vivid colors.
