He collected beautiful things. Rare things. Ripped them out of their natural environment and preserved them in all of their dead splendor. The problem was I wasn't beautiful. I was all of the hideous and ugly realities of the world packaged into one broken human being. He came to kill me. That was his business. Death. He ripped me out of my natural environment, the prison I'd created, and locked me away with all of his beautiful dead things. I hated him. I still hate him. But if I was given the choice and the ability to leave this cage, come back to life - I'd stay dead. In all of my hideous splendor. Because my murderer can only possess dead things. And I can only be possessed by someone more broken and ugly than me.… (mehr)

Loved the book, hated the ending. Felt like it was a cliffhanger, but the book doesn't seem to have a sequel. Make of it what you will. ( )

Good lord. This author has to be a witch. There is no other explanation. The way she has crafts her words and creates a story is mesmerizing. She has cast a spell on me. She has become one of my top favorite my favorite authors. And I just discovered her last night.

This is a dark story. Not dark in the typical way. I don't know how to even explain it. It's not torture or kidnapping in the typical style or way. Even though Elizabeth is abducted. There aren't even other books out there that even come close to this book that I could describe it as similar to. There was beauty amidst the ugliness. It was discovering how just being a living breathing person does not mean you are alive. Sometimes you needed death or the possibility of dying to become alive.

I am not even sure if any of this review makes sense. She has left me that befuddled. See, she cast a spell on me. If you are looking for a book that tests your sanity and beliefs then look no further. It will hurt. Your heart will want to hurt for Elizabeth and the life she endured to get to this breaking point. Yet, if you allow yourself to read and savor the lesson then just maybe you will discover that life and death go hand in hand. There is not one without the other.

Hands down the best book I have read in 2018. ( )

Amazingly dark read! I was not expecting this at all from Anne but nonetheless it was great. I loved these two. I loved the unconventional way Lukyan healed her. No matter how broken she seemed she came out a stronger person. I was not expecting the twist in this book either. This book was another great addition to Anne’s Arsenal!! ( )
