Mitch's Dad has taken up a job at the mines which means he now lives a Fly in, ( works at mines for 3 weeks) Fly out ( stays at home for 1.5 weeks) lifestyle and Mitch misses him. It seems to have put a strain on his Mum too and then his Dad seems to be so angry every time he comes home and constantly shouts at Mitch. Mitch has no-one to tell his troubles to except a magpie that has an injured wing that he feeds. At school, Mitch has a lot to contend with - an extra workload including a huge ANZAC project, a girl who was his friend and now he sort of likes and can't talk to, and various other schoolyard issues. It is only the magpie or koolbardi in the language of his indigenous friend Ryan that Mitch can turn to.
Nice coming-of-age Australian story. Suitable for Year 5 upwards. ( )

Eleven-year-old Mitch feels a little out of place when his Fly In – Fly Out dad’s behaviour becomes erratic. Mitch makes friends with an ailing magpie, whom he names Maximus, and they heal each other.

This inventive novel deals with themes of self-esteem, family love and first love with tenderness and skill. It draws on Steve Heron’s long experience as a worker with children. Steve, the founder of the BUZ programs (Build-Up Zone) for primary-aged children, has written before, but this is his first full-length novel for children.

I enjoyed it. Be-friending a magpie is obviously drawn from experience. The book contains a brilliant description of an inter-school football match.
Maximus means ‘the Greatest’ in Latin, and Steve shows the journey to greater self-esteem in a way that will appeal to middle- and upper-primary readers.

I am a friend of Steve’s, and a former colleague, and I am proud to commend this engaging story. ( )
